schnauzer_mum
Hi! Just a quick one - I collected my 9 week old (just today) mini schnauzer puppy last Saturday from my breeder. My breeder called me yesterday to mention she forgot to tell me about his worming requirements, that he hadn't been wormed at 8 weeks. So i ran out and bought the Drontal Puppy Suspension to give to him - my question is : will it be a problem to worm him a week late, should I then delay his further worming by one week to make up for it? or should i just keep to the regular weeks (12 weeks and then every month until six months of age). Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Aziah
Did you buy the liquid? Have you used it yet? If not, return it and purchase the tablet form. Who suggested worming your puppy monthly until 6 months of age? I think that's over-kill. Edited October 13, 2010 by Aziah
WreckitWhippet
Hell yeah, return the suspension and grab a 10kg tablet and break that up according to his weight.

The pre-patent period for most worms (not inc heartworm) is only 3-4 weeks. That means if your dog ingests a worm larvae it will take 3-4 weeks the larvae to become worms and start producing more larvae. ETA: to answer the original question: it will be ok to do it a week later. The effects of the drug actually only last in the dogs system for 24-48 hours, whihc is why for heavy infestations, you can give one tablet everyday for a few days until alll the worms are gone. But get the chewable ones as others have recommended. Edited October 13, 2010 by aussielover
Sandra777
Except in a rescue type situation I wouldn't be worming the puppy until he had been at his new home for at least 7-10 days. It's enough stress on a pup changing homes without throwing chemicals at him. He'll be fine, assuming he's had a reasonable upbringing it won't kill him to wait. Austerra
Both Drontal Tablets and Drontal Suspension - (As per directions for use in packet) treat at 2, 4, 8 & 12 weeks, then every month until 6 months of age, thereafter every 3 months or on vet advice. becks
Congrats on buying a mini pup! Don't stress about dosing times, there is some flexibility to the schedule. I use milbemax on pups that age, then use Drontal normally with the adults, sometimes I change brand to make sure all worm types are covered.
