♥Baxter♥
A little confused here...my cousin that lives in Quebec a has a guide dog & she tells me that she isn't allowed to give her any bones & raw food etc...? Why is that?? Bit strange?
aussielover
Well guide dogs NSW allows the puppies at least to eat bones and raw, but I guess a fully trained guide dog is worth betweeb 30 000-40 000 so maybe they just don't want to risk an obstruction. Also, they have to be kept on a pretty strict diet to keep them at a good weight.
stormie
I know that there was recently an issue with therapy dogs not being allowed to eat raw meat due to them possibly shedding salmonella into the environments they visit, eg hospitals etc and affecting immune compromised people. Perhaps it's a similar issue now with Guide Dogs, due to them travelling around public places so much?
aussielover
Apparently guide dogs QLD feed all their dogs on a raw diet.
persephone
Maybe because the organisation has a sponsor who manufactures pet food?
GoldenGirl85
Apparently guide dogs QLD feed all their dogs on a raw diet. Yes they do, and arent likely to be going back to kibble by the sounds of it, did you ever ask the NSW group about it for Mindy?
Esky the husky
I've heard the same to be true for service dogs in America. The concern was something about bacteria being spread from the dogs mouth to people in hospitals with compromised immune systems, possibly making them sicker. Yes, but since they are sponsored by pedigree/advance they are pretty keen to keep using the dry.
