Why Are There So Many Gory Topics In This Section ?

The thing for me is that I want to feel outraged and I want others to as well. I work in child protection and there are numerous large agencies out there advocating against child abuse and domestic violence but what do animals get? We have no strong advocating body nationally (although there may be pockets locally). Outrage that leads to people power can be a useful tool to ensure public opinion is known and influences legislation for these crimes.

There is clear evidence that people (particularly children) who sadistically abuse animals will go on to commit heinous crimes against humans. So for our own safety alone we should be outraged and we should demand strong sentences against animal abusers. What kind of specific treatment options are even out there for animal abusers or even hoarders? I don't personally know of any. Basically incidents of animal abuse is an indicator for the future health and wellbeing for this country. How much are we all willing to tolerate?

And as an Autralian Citizen I believe I have a right to complain if I think a person's sentence is not strong enough and there was one recently that I felt did not fit the crime. I consider that person a risk to any community he lives in. Would you and your dogs like to live next door to a serious animal abuser who just got a fine?

:p

This section was created to keep the gory stories out of the General section, as so many people were upset by them there. It also made it easier to see if someone else had linked a story already, because there'd be three or four threads started for each dog attack. If you don't like it, don't read it. Is it any worse than looking at a news website or walking through a newsagency or supermarket checkout and seeing the headlines there?

There's a 'suggestions' section right at the bottom, or you can PM Troy or push the report button if you find a thread particularly offensive.

Well that's great but the problem is that one person says 'Hey I feel outraged' and every other idiot in the world starts screaming for the abusers balls to be cut off. It's extremely bloody disturbing to see the base common denominator at work. Can we just see news story without the bogan element thrown in? Thanks.

Sad stories depress me too, but not to the point where I can't read them/view pictures.

If you can't stomach it, don't click on it. Really simple solution.

It's not a question of whether it can be "stomached", it's whether it's necessary.

It is reality.

I can't blame someone who posts up dog related cruelty, this being a dog forum. If I find it too depressing, I won't click on it.

When I joined DOL, the forum menu was such that I could get to my favorite forums without having to scroll down the menu. Since then the Forum list has grown from the top. Now when Il log in for a quick look, training doesn't even appear on the screen. Anyone who works in marketing can tell you that sequence of appearance has a huge effect on likeliness of reading ... that's why everyone wants the front page, and why there are so many companies named AAA this and that. It's like Breeds 101 and In the News jumped to the front page and displaced training to page and Health,Nutrition and Grooming is getting down there. I don't think people's cruelty to animals has much to do with pedigree dogs . . . or, for that matter, monkeys stolen from the zoo. No big deal if they're on DOL, but I don't think they deserve the front page.

If this forum stays dominated by negative stories, I think it should be put down below the training and show sections . . . so people will be exposed to it only if they seek it out.

How does that work? You're only going to be exposed to it if you seek it out anyway. Just dont look in the news subforum if it upsets you so much. Pretty simple, really.

I just get the whole Dol menu so maybe you're subscribing to new posts or something. The news subforum never comes up on top of the page for me  It wouldnt bother me if it did anyway because the first thing I look at is the frigging world news so I'm bound to see something horrible. That's life so sorry but get over it. This is an animal lovers forum so it's natural for people to post news stories about animals. Dont look in here if it disturbs you.
