Vaccinations

Hi

I have a 13 year old dog who has been on Prenisone for several years. He hasn't been vaccinated for at least five years and now I need to board him. This requires a C5 vaccination. I am concerned about vaccinating a dog on prednisone as it suppresses the immune system. Phoned the vets and answer was they could give him a lower dose of vaccination which will give lower immunity??? Any one out there vaccinated their dogs while on cortisone??

regards Laura

ps It is not an option to take him off the prednisone

Depends on why he is on the prednisolone and what dose of it he is on.

If he is on prednisolone for an immune mediated condition, I would titre test him rather than vaccinating. If it's more for skin allergies etc then if he is on a low-ish dose, although he might not have a full response it should not prevent some kind of immune response.

I would prefer not to vaccinate him however I wonder whether boarding kennels would accept titre test results

He is on prednil for skin problems as well as an allergic irritation of the trachea and ended up with pneumonia before he was on prednil.

The vet should be able to give him an exemption on health grounds. They're only supposed to vaccinate healthy dogs and he's not healthy. I had my dogs titre tested last time, mainly because my old fellow was on Pred. I think there's a kennel in WA that accepts titres but if you're not in WA that's not much help!
