Dog "clearing Throat"

 Share

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, my puppy destroyed my partner's shoes. His fault, he shouldn't have left them outside, no sympathy from me. Anyway, ever since, Akira has been making a strange noise as though she's clearing her throat. It seems worse when she's been running around or straight after eating.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to help her?

Thanks guys. I'm keeping an eye on her - wasn't able to get in to the vet yesterday and I don't want to take her on the weekend unless it's an emergency, so we'll be going on Monday. She's not sick at all, and the "cough" doesn't sound like kennel cough (she has been vaccinated against it as well) so I'd say it definitely relates to the shoe she ate.

Hope she is okay, but I am thinking vet visit as well.

ETA - they can still get kennel cough even if they are vaccinated. The idea is it will not be as severe, but it is like the Flu vacc, it doesn't cover every strain.

Oh yeah, I know they can. My main point was that it doesn't sound like kennel cough.

She has actually started itching a bit this morning and sneezing. When she sneezes, she does the throat clearing thing too. I have really bad hayfever at the moment (have to take an antihistamine every morning just to get me through the day) so I'm wondering if she's being affected by it too. I'll take her to the vet tomorrow.

Could it be reverse sneezing? Is she actually breathing out like a cough or breathing in?

I'm not sure, I'll have to listen to her do it again, if she does. She hasn't done it again since early this morning, and she's been on lead and hasn't done it either. So maybe she was reverse sneezing and I didn't realise (I've only ever seen a pug do it before, so I'm sure from a Husky it'd sound really different).

ETA: I've just heard her do it again and have watched a video on YouTube to compare. She is definitely reverse sneezing. Thank goodness for that.

Hey WA- after you mentioned watching a youtube video of it, I copied, as Tika has been doing something strange in the early hours of the morning too, and, sure enough, she's reversing sneezing as well! Very weird phenomenon, I'm still not sure if I should worry or not, but we're due for a vet visit soon anyway, so I'll ask about it then....

Not sure if you saw the thread but my little girl was reverse sneezing a lot for about a week. Thankfully the issue resolved itself, but the vet thinks she had something like a blade of grass stuck up her nose. If it continued, we were going to get her put under so they could go get it out, so that it didn't get infected or cause any more issues.
