Some Help Please

We have been away since 27 Sep and arrived home today to this on my boy, Odin.

His first symptoms were on 25 Sep and looked like conjunctivitis, (he had been at a show on 25 Sep). On 26 Sep his eye was red and on 27 Sep swollen. I dropped him into to the vet clinic on our way "out" and he was there again yesterday.

My vet has had him on antibiotics and he has a topical eye ointment being applied twice daily. She has not seen anything like it before.

We have him booked in again on Monday for a 2nd opinion and chances are we will have to see a specialist.

Has anyone seen anything similar to this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Hesa.

Looks to me like a grass seed infection, if you are refering to the Nanango show, there was thousands of red grass seeds on the grass in the rings, these are extremely hard to see with the naked eye as they are RED and so is the coloration of the eye, my dogs were absolutely covered in them from the ring infront of the shed/canteen , they wipe off harmlessly but if your dog gets one under its eyelid it can infect as the dog rubs it.

When people think of Grass seed they think of the larger black seeds, but its the red ones that are hard to find.

Good luck with it, I usually try flushing with a saline solution in a suringe for a bit of pressure not just drops, but mention the RED seeds to your vet.

Cheers

Hogz

Odin has a sebaceous cyst on his eyelid, he has had a slow release cortisone injection which should bring the swelling down within 72 hours and a change of anti-biotics.

Hope he heals soon, just curious as my GSD gets "sebaceous cysts' on the skin and these 'pop' like a fatty pimple. As they are on the skin where 'sebum' is excreted it makes sense, didn't know this could also happen on an eye area though?? :coffee: It does look a bit like an ulceration to me?? The cortisone will cetainly help, I've had my share of 'eye' issues this year with two of my cats. One had a similar looking problem and it was an ulceration, all healed now but was a long process, involving 'surgery' and the eyelid being stitched shut to aid healing.

Oh, I guess if the cyst is on the eyelid it would irritate the eye, I 'see' now. Ingrown eyelashes do that to some Cavaliers. Poor fella.

LizT, the vet is 100% sure it is a cyst. As you have described it, it is a minute yellow "fatty" looking pimple. Odin seems happier already and almost back to being 'The Clown" that we have christened him. :coffee: No mention of an ulceration.

Fit for a King, thank you for your recommendation, I didn't reralise that there was a Specialist Centre at Tanawha.

Poor fella, even the most minute pimple would feel huge against his eye.

The fatty cyst my dog gets 'refils' and need attending to from time to time. I hope Odins doesn't follow the same behaviour.

BTW cool name Odin...my brother had a Norwegian Elkhound called Odin. :)
