Bernese Mountain Dogs

Hi :)

Just a random question for the night....

I love to research dog breeds and have latley been researching the bernese mountain dog. A lot of the information I have read says that the Berners dont cope with the heat at all and if you live in a warm environment dont even think about getting a Berner...so is this true? Or could they adapt to a warmer climate?

Also because they are a 'rarer' breed, does this mean that they would cost more to buy than a more common breed of dog?

This is all just out of intrest :crossfingers:

Thanks!

We have two Alaskan Malamutes and they do ok in summer. We do have air conditioning though and we just limit their walks in Summer. We only go very early in the morning or quite late of an evening and if it's been an absolute stinker then they miss out and don't go.

I have 5 berners, they cope as well as any hairy dog in the heat. I have a huge pergola and when its hot husband will come home at lunch time and put them inside in the airconditioning.

They dont like heat much but no worse than any other breed.

We are pretty vigilant in the heat but would be with any dog I guess.

We have one Berner & she does ok in the heat (as well as any other big, hairy dog anyways!) We have a kid's pool that she can cool off in, a cool mat for her to lay on and she can go under the deck to the cool dirt shaded area when she needs to. We try to keep her inside when its really hot out (as I imagine most dog owners would). At night, she prefers to lay on the cool tiles floors rather than her bed.

I met 2 Berners who live in Far North Queensland, and they both seemed to cope with the heat well too.
