Julz it sounds like the vet has not impressed upon you how vitally important it is to keep the dogs quiet. Ideally they should be crated with only on leash toilet breaks. No playing with children, no visitors and certainly no visiting dogs to excite them.

My house was off limits to everyone when my dog was on Vit K. I disconnected my doorbell when he was out of the crate (sitting with me) so he didn't run to the door if someone rang the bell. I put the telephone on mute because my dogs think when the phone rings it requires some action from them. My dog had definitely eaten enough rat bait to kill a dog much larger than he is.

Each and every time your dogs walk around there will be capillary ruptures. You need to keep them very quiet at all times so there is as little risk as possible for a bleed.

I made chicken broth with the bones of a bbq chicken and mixed the broth with water to encourage him to drink. He was keen to drink it and we had no dehydration issues.

Sending prayers and healing vibes for your two dogs

Based on the experienced advice from other DOlers I'd be at another vet straight away. It sounds like a very critical situation.

I hope they are okay, they will be in my thoughts all day.

I have to agree with the other posters on this page that are concerned.

Your original post made it sound like you are in the middle of nowhere hours from the nearest city - is this the case?

I also have to say it was a strange thing for your Vet to say if you were quoting directly, we would be warning that there is a SLIM chance that something terrible could happen but you would have been well informed about when you needed to take one or both of the dogs to emergency for a transfusion. If we thought you weren't good at identifying gum colour we would have you bring the dogs in daily for checks +/- PCV.

Perhaps there is something else going on with your dog but the fluid therapy sounds too quick, and was there no blood profile done yesterday????

You still haven't stated what dose of Vit K they are on, I hope it's not something like 1 or 2 tablets daily............

My recommendation was to get a second opinion, especially when your vet says they haven't saved any dogs at all from this situation.

When my boy was released (still on a drip) from the emergency centre, they told me to take him to a normal vet. I rang around (I was new to the area) and one vet had the honesty to tell me that if I left him with them or another normal vet, he'd probably die. They rang ahead and made an appointment at the Vet Specialist Centre for me and he spent two weeks in there, being closely monitored the whole time. They told me he wasn't out of the woods when they released him but to take him home, keep him quiet and peaceful and give him the Vit K every few hours - I had to enlist the help of neighbours as I worked full time and this was required for 2 months I think.

He made it through thank God although he was never the same again, healthwise.

Treatment with Vitamin K is usually successful, especially if it is started prior to clinical signs and the course of treatment is long enough and at a high enough dose for the particular type of rat bait ingested. It can certainly go badly, but these would ordinarily be the cases that are already sick and bleeding by the time we get to see them and some cases can turn around quickly once treatment is started. Can you tell us what type of rat bait it was, how big your dogs are and what dose of Vitamin K they are on?

If your dog was dehydrated enough to require IV fluids (regardless of whether they have eaten rat bait) at the very minimum they should have had a PCV and TPP done to assess the level of dehydration, and if it was me doing the 'minimum' I would add in electrolytes as well. For a dog that has a history of rat bait ingestion, we should at least have an idea of whether the blood can clot - even if an activated clotting time is not done, blood left in a plain tube should clot eventually. If you don't have those basic answers, then I (strongly) suggest another opinion - it is BASIC information and it's important to the treatment of your dog.

i'm feeling a lil bit desperate for information --- julz, how's it going?

maybe she's found herself a more competent vet!

ya know, despite all the success stories, i'll be investigating those electrical pest contro devices, and damn the cost --- i have absolutely no desire to put my dogs, myself or my OH thru such a difficult and devastating touch and go scenario...

i'm gutted just having read this stuff...

putting out more good health and strength vibes julz --- for all of you

pretty cheap [if it really does work] but i can't find a manufacturer's website so i can do some deep research --- if you locate the one depicted centrally in your home, it apparently vibrates the buggars out and away from your home :flame:

i am sooooo hoping that julz is enjoying some happy news...
