lovemesideways
So I have Rover home. He is fast asleep with Riddick curled up against him (Riddick is very happy his brother is home )Vet basically repeated what he told mum. Can any vet or vet nurses (or people who know) translate this for me? Its from the receipt from the vet. Lab - P.C.V. & Total Protein Lav - VetTest - Diag Hlth Prof 1.5 Betamox Injection SA 2.8 Cerenia Inj 10mg/ml and I have 15 Amoxil (moxylan) tablets (200mg), which are the antibiotics. I was told he had a small positive for pancreatitis, but its Most likely something he has eaten and had a severe reaction to. They gave him some stuff for anti nausea. He has been given an antibiotic injection for tonight and I'm to start him on the tablets tomorrow. If he starts throwing up again or basically is still lethargic and unwell tomorrow I'm to bring him back so they can check him over and do some more tests. Did they actually give you the results for these tests? PCV is packed cell volume, checking for thing like anaemia, it can also be used as a guide for dehydration. cerenia is an anti-nausea injection, betamox is an antibiotic injection (the same as the tabs you have, but injectable). The health profile is a range of general health parameters that check such things as kidney function, liver function, glucose levels, pancreatic enzymes etc. I'm guessing that lipase was slightly elevated- that was the small positive for pancreatitis??? If they were really worried about pancreatitis, I would have thought they would have done a CPLI, which is more specific and diagnositic for canine pancreatitis. It actually sounds alot like what Mindy had (some kind of gastro/food poisoning thing), interstingly, I was told she stopped having tremors at the vet, but at home she started having them again. They vet said not to worry and to let her sleep it off, which i did, but also kept a very close eye on her. She was fine by the next morning though. I hope Rover feels better soon! Thanks for that! Good to know what it all means. They Didn't give me the results, but then I didn't ask for them (was too busy cuddling my boy). He has had gastro before, and upset stomach. Never this intense though. lovemesideways
I'm glad Rover's ok. Me too! He is sleeping very soundly. Must have been feeling so crappy before, not able to get comfortable or sleep. Poor boy.
~Shepherd~
If it is a gut bug, I'd suggest you get some form of probiotics in his guts to try and build back up his enyme level especially if it has happened before. More chance of gut and digestive related issues popping up down the track if the balance remains out for too long. Good luck, glad he is home. ish
Protexin is great but make sure you check with your vet that he's ok to go onto it first
~Shepherd~
Protexin is great but make sure you check with your vet that he's ok to go onto it first beat me. keep the diet simple too for the next 3 months. Could take that long for the gut to get back to normal.
CrazyCresties
Just a thought as we have one of these trees that has started dropping berries everywhere over the last couple of weeks - they are pretty toxic I believe Got any of these nearby? http://www.delange.org/ChinaBerry/ChinaBerry.htm

Mas1981
Great news that Rover was comfortable last night. Protexin is great, I believe Paws make a good probiotic too, although I have not tried it as yet.

There is no point in starting it until you've finished the antibiotics. The abs do not discrimate between "bad" bacteria and "good " bacteria generally speaking. I have some PAW probiotics (you are welcome to have- they didn't do anything for my dog) but persoanlly i think those human-grade ones that are kept refrigerated are probably better, there are a couple of brands but i have used inner-health plus before with success. I hope Rover is feeling better today!

Still tired, but very hungry so a good sign! moosepup
Any chance he could've eaten macadamia nuts? They're toxic and the reaction sounds similar. I have had to take Moose to emergency twice for this and he had tremors and very weak back legs, dragging his feet, vomiting, etc. It's very scary. aussielover
well, it won't hurt to start on the probiotics now So if you feel you want to, you should. I think a lot depends on what particular antibiotic is used.
