Vader's mum
I got some puppy pads today thought I would give thema try. However when I put one on the floor put kenobi on it and let him walk away so he knows where it is blah blah blah. Anyway he picked it up and dreagged it around the house, so now Im re thinking it. Did this happen to any of you? if so, how did you fix it? I think I may just abonded it.....

betsy
I used them for a while. Only put them out at night (in laundry) and put newspaper over the top. It was really only as a backup overnight.

Vader's mum
He usually goes outside and I set the alarm to take him outside but I am finding puddles and bombs after I take him out we spend a good 10-15mins out there and he usually does his business but still happening I know he's only a pup so I am not expecting a miracle I just thought if I could train him on the pad inside when I saw him heading towards the door area (where the pad would be) I could take him outside. It's very hard to supervise in my house it's not open plan I cant see him all the time.
koalathebear
Hi If you take him out after all meals, drinks and sleeping, the ‘bombs’ should be less, although little puppies seem to be able to keep such a lot of wee and poo in them. When he was a very young puppy, we confined Elbie to the kitchen using de facto dog gates – we have proper dog gates now. You could try a pen as well. Then as he gets better toilet-trained you can increase the area that he’s allowed to access. He had quite a few accidents on the way to the door but it’s promising that he heads towards the door. That’s really the most important thing – that he knows he’s supposed to go outside and ask to be let out when he wants to toilet. To be honest, you should prepare yourself for quite a few more indoor messes before he gets it right. I tried to use puppy pads when we moved house i.e. I wanted to show Elbie the ‘new’ area where he was supposed to toilet. It didn’t really work because he just wanted to play with the puppy pads. In the end, all that worked was taking him out on a leash to Poo Corner and hanging around with him until he does his business. In the early days, there was a lot of waiting but these days he gets to his business first and then goes to play. Good luck!
aussielover
Aww he is till just a baby puppy (tho i'm glad those days are over for us!), he will get it in time. I have to say, one thing that REALLY helped me, and sped up the process enormously was to put a command on toileting. It is sooo easy and so worthwhile. Yes, you do feel like a bit of an idiot at first, but once they get it (and they generally get it pretty quick) it really reduced the amount of time you have to spend waiting around for them to go. I use "quick quick" but people also use wee wee, go to the toilet etc.... You can initally say the word when they are actually going to the toilet- lots of praise and treats after, the try to say the command just before they actually go to squat, and then when they are sniffing around. Good luck
Vader's mum
He's gated off the carpet areas so he hass free roam on the tiles and flor boards so I am not woried about that we've only had a few incidents on carpet. I have a pen for him but god how he hates it he moan and whines to no end! and it does my head in but I dont give in I will let him out if he's quiet only and lots of praise when he is. As far as the command goes we have one its toilet we say it while he sniff and is doing his business seems to be working to some degree, however he cuts himseflf off half way through for his treat so I have been doing alternate treat and praise and praise and pats. I will have a o at the matts but Im not holding my breath hes still little and who could be mad at his beautiful face!
tlc
Hi, I have trained my guys to ring a bell to let me know if they want to go out, My oldest two would whine at the door to let me know they wanted to go out but my third pup would sit at the door and didn't make a sound so if I didn't see her she would just wee at the door and that was that. So I decided to try using the bell, my OH said oh that will never work, she picked it up in one night. All I did was touch her paw on the bell hanging on the door and let her out to do her business and lots of praise when she came back in. By the next night she was doing it on her own only when she needed a wee. SHe also rings the bell now to let me know the cat is at the door. My other dogs also ring the bell except one, Im sure she thinks the bell is benieth her and she will give a little yap or wake me up to go out during the night. The two boys just picked up the bell ringing from watching Tully do it. Here is a website with how t ogo about it, but it is easy to teach and Beagles are smart he will catch on easily. http://www.dogchatforum.com/dog-puppy-ring-bell-go-out.htm

I never used treats for rewards after toileting for that exact reason, just lots of praise.
koalathebear
Hi, I have trained my guys to ring a bell to let me know if they want to go out Your dogs are so smart! I thought about teaching Elbie this but I had a terrible fear that he would eat the bell. So we've just taught him to stand at the back door and give one woof to be let out. In the old days he used to stand there quietly and pensively as if we could read his mind or something.
tlc
Thanks they are pretty clever I will admit! I was suprised how quickly they caught onto the bell thing and how the boys just followed suit I didnt even show them how.

Thats why it is best to try to begin to say it before he startes to go, ideally when he is sniffing for a good spot. I sort of shocked my puppy mid way the first time i said it Yeah- whenever i try to correct my puppy, half the time i just start laughing. Do you have any photos??? ESCS
If you still want to use the puppy pads, you can get trays that you attach the pads too. It's pretty hard to drag one of those plastic trays around until they are a bit older. I found mine in either Woolies or Coles. Also at pet shops but much more expensive. Mine use to tear up the pads. The tray stopped him tearing it up but he never learnt to use the pad. I also ended up focusing on taking him outside and he picked that up very quickly. mackenzie11
i have used these with mollie for 5 weeks now, she is 15 weeks old, and she has never dragged them around the house, fingers crossed she never will, i have a room set up for her "potty" room and the pee pads are set up in there, i take her in there at all the standard times & b4 i crate her, mollie has tried once or twice to dig them up and have told her in a stern voice "Leave It" and she does, maybe persevere and you will get there with you dog good luck

KumaAkita
I have photos somewhere of the aftermath of Kuma being left inside with a few pee-pads. When he was littler, we kept him inside during the day if it was raining (our backyard is dirt...) The first time he started to shred them it was like he had painstakingly ripped it into matching squares. All the pieces were the same size and shape... After that he started to shred them willy nilly. So, OH built a kennel and he now fends for himself in the rain.
whiskedaway
When we first got Akira, she'd have accidents in the middle of the night - always in the kitchen, which was fairly easy to clean up. To make it easier, we got some puppy pads but she'd pull them around as well. So to combat that, we taped them to the floor. However, she decided to poo/wee AROUND the pad rather than on it, so we gave that up. As she got a bit older, she got a kennel, and then started sleeping outside, so it was no longer too much of a problem.

I could just see kenobi doing that every where but on the pad, I havent had much luck so I have decieded to pack it in. We have an older cat who sometimes cant hold on all the time, she makes it to the littler tray and thinks ok its good to let go (if the feet are in so is the rest) so we often have puddles so pads arent wasted.
