I really want our boy to love water, I have read several times that beagles are just not water dogs. So is there anything I can do to help this? I was out cleaning the backyard the other day and he seemed to have fun playing with the water from the hose, but then today I played with him in the laundry and he wasnt too keen. persephone Posted September 26, 2010 Share Posted September 26, 2010 your puppy is only a baby yet ... just let him play with the hose- place a few shallow containers around with water and a floatie toy .. leave a tap dripping into his bowl... he will play if he is interested , and if he's not - then that's his choice beach sometimes is not a good plan... a mouthful/eyes full of salt water sometimes puts them off Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We owe his good swimming style and love of the water to an 8 yo female rotti that taught him how to swim when he was a pup. We didn't force him just let him follow the other dog. There were many trips to the beach though where he just played like a crocodile and wouldn't really go in the water before he got the hang of swimming but eventually he got it. I dont want to take him to the beach yet and def not of the lead! eeekkkk he'd be off in a heart beat. We were looking at getting one of those shells for summer so he can play in it so will just work up to it were not going to force the issue just wondered if you all had tips on making it fun. aussielover Posted September 27, 2010 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Give him time I see plently of beagles at the beach who are more than happy to enter the water for a swim, so i odn't think it is a breed thing. My puppy was 5 months old before she started to LOVE swimming. She followed two other labs into the water one day and hasn't looked back since LOL. She has even started launching herself off banks and the small wharf/jetty like a real lab! Before that she would just paddle around in the water but not really want to swim. I would never force a dog to go in though. You may find it is a blessing that your dog isn't drawn to water. At least you won't have to deal with a wet dog! Mrs Rusty Bucket Posted September 27, 2010 Share Posted September 27, 2010 take dog to beach, find it a doggy friend who loves water, encourage lots of play and when they both get hot, the water loving one will go for a swim and the beagle will follow. At least that's how I'd try it. My dog also likes to chase the water out the hose around the garden and paddle in the clam shell (which I have located to catch rain water). Some vets have hydrobaths and walkers and heated swimming pools for dogs. I find a dog that is cold and not warmed up, prefers warm water and will get phobic about bath time if you use cold water, and yet is happy to be hosed off with cold water at the beach after a good run (ie toasty dog). At our local oval, in summer, the dogs will seek out puddles and the oval sprinklers. And sit in it. Thinking of getting a clam shell for the cricket oval to encourage them to cool off in that instead of the soft cricket pitch. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Mim Posted September 27, 2010 Share Posted September 27, 2010 What I did was I got a shell pool and got my pup used to doing in and out of it, I made it a game with lots of praise. Once he saw the pool as something fun I added a tiny bit of water. Like a puddle in the center. He was fine with that so next time I added enough water to cover the tops of his feet. Kept playing our game of getting in and out with lots of praise and just by slowly increasing the amount of water he now LOVES water. I did the same with my girl and she is even more water obsessed than him I think. She loves to go swimming. My younger boy hates water and no amount of play and encouragement can change that I think He gets such a look of disgust on his face if he gets splashed by one of the other dogs. RiverStar-Aura Posted September 28, 2010 Share Posted September 28, 2010 I'd be cautious with the beach because a lot of young dogs/puppies can find the waves intimidating. My Zeus is a beagle cross and he loves the water now but was completely terrified of the ocean as a puppy because the waves bowled him over and he couldn't control them. I love the idea of buying him a shell because Zeus has one and absolutely loves it (once he stopped eating and destroying it!). The local off leash park we frequent also backs onto a creek and many of the dogs there are water crazy so he just follows them in now. I call him my psycho water baby!! :lol: Start with something shallow and calm and gradually deepen the water, but give the beach a go too but again, stick to the shallow, less rough parts and let your pup decide how far in he wants to go. Vader's mum Posted September 28, 2010 Author Share Posted September 28, 2010 Thanks all, we have been playing with the hose and seem to enjoy that I will give the bath a go on the weekend we have a blow up pool but its massive and I cant be bothered blowing it up SO it will be slow and steady with him and hopefully we'll get their if only it is a shallow paddle in a pool, I just dont want him affraid as we go fishing a fair bit and want to take him with us. We've just gone with them at least once a month and they now love it. As soon as we let them off lead, they head straight for the water and run through it. Still a little weary of the water coming towards them, but as soon as it recedes, they run through it. Give him time He's only a baby.
