sas
Puppy is only 9 weeks old, it won't be toilet trained for some time yet and you have to make sure the puppy never has an accident. In regards to 'Sit' - head to puppy school where you can learn to train your dog And in regards to the collar, tough titty, it will get used to it. Just attached a light weight lead to the collar when you're home and let the puppy drag it around so it gets used to the tention. At 9 weeks your puppy hasn't had all its' vaccination shots so you shouldn't be taking it out for a walk yet. Guest
Hi Mishiibabi, it is not easy having a new puppy lots of hard work, and the main thing is not to smack your puppy if he does wrong, and only praise him when he does something good for you.below is a link that may be helpful to you. he is only a very young puppy and will need to be taken outdoors very often, and especially after eating and drinking. lablove http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bruno/puppyraising.htm
persephone
Hi new pups are hard work! Like human babies . Because your puppy is only a baby, walking it away from your backyard is dangerous! Until your pup is fully vaccinated it may catch diseases- some of which are fatal. They need to be taken outside to the toilet many times during the day, and some times at night. They need lots of praise when they do things right That is how they learn ! They are only BABIES- so they do not know anything about house rules/obedience/toileting in the place you want. Yes, you will have lots of cleaning to do, you will have things chewed, you will need a lot of patience. BUT- you will have those cute eyes staring at you , and loving you! koalathebear
As everyone else has said, your puppy is only 8 weeks old and is capable of very little right now. People have given you a lot of useful links to read. Basically: - make sure you take your puppy outside after water, meals and sleeping - take your puppy out every 2-3 hours at night to do toileting - take your puppy outside on a leash to do toileting and guide it to the right spot of the yard where you want it to go to the toilet - when the puppy goes, you praise it and also use a word eg quick quick/pooppoop/toilet etc. In terms of training, as everyone has mentioned, puppy class is the way to go. Also, if your puppy every accidentally does something you like e.g. sit - praise it like crazy so that it knows that it has done the right thing. A puppy that little doesn't need to go for walks yet and you can just play with it in the house and the backyard. You have a long road ahead of you but puppyhood doesn't last forever and it's very rewarding as long as you have patience and take a break when you get frustrated
aussielover
my puppy is just 9wks old~~we tried to train it the basic "sit", "hand"...but there no response, and it keep on doing it business on the floorbtw, my maltese pup dont like to ear a collar, I'm struggling to take it out for a walk thanks You shouldn't be taking a 9 week old puppy out for a walk anyway as he/she isn't fully vaccinated yet. You can carry your puppy in your arms if you would like to socialise him. Practice with a light weight lead in the house, using lots of praise and treats for good walking. I find cat collars are nice for small breed puppies- very light and soft. Otherwise you could try a body harness, but really puppies should be taught to accept a colllar and a lead without fuss (unless there is a medical problem). It is unlikely a puppy would be toilet trained at 9 weeks old. Often they are not reliable until 4 months of age, and even then, there may be a relaspse in the "teenage" period. Book your puppy into a good puppy preschool- perhaps you could tell us what area you're in and people may be able to recommend a good school. A bad puppy school is worse than no puppy school at all, it may teach your pup to be fearful or too boisterous around other dogs, so you must try to find a good oone. You will leanr how to teach your puppy to sit and to do tricks if you wish. There is a good dog trick subforum on here as well. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy
