Can I Clean My Dog's Ears While He Is On A Course Of Ear Drops?

Hey Everyone!

My boy has a case of gunky ears, no mites etc but the vet thought it might be worthwhile using ear drops for 8 days, twice a day to help clear it all up. I forgot to ask her whether I can clean them during the 8 days he is having the drops put in? I just use cotton wool with malacetic otic. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Nadz,

I'd leave it while your using the drops. Otherwise you'll be cleaning out all the good stuff as well.

You can give the ears a quick clean before putting the drops in... it's what I did with Charlie

thanks all I gave them a good clean yesterday before i put the first dose in, CW EW did you do it just before the first dose, or also during the course?

During. Each time I put the drops in, i give it a quick clean.

Just get cotton ball and gently and quickly clean around the area, don't go in too deep and then put ear drops in. If I don't clean it, Charlie's ear will get really gunky and oily.. then he will get frustrated, scratching his ear all the time.

same here - where charlie had an infection i cleaned before dosing twice a day at my vets instruction.

Personally I would be cleaning before I dose.

If you think of an ear infection like any other infection....you wouldn't put a treatment on a wound and then wash it would you? And likewise, you wouldn't put a dressing on a dirty wound.

Yep my boy had a recent ear infection, and the vet told me to clean 1 hr before the drops go in. This gives time to make sure they are dry.
