Empty Rings At A Show

Why is it such a bad thing to practice in an empty finished ring while a show is on???

is it inconsiderate to lead train/show train etc in the empty ring?? if yes why???

We had the show officals telling people to get out of the rings at a show today over the speakers...

I've done it before so has a few other people..

I could understand if ppl where just using to "toilet"the dogs...

We do it all the time, never seen anyone kick up a stink??? I think as long as you aren't disturbing anybody or being loud etc there shouldn't be a problem? People do it all the time here.

We have only been told to get out of the rings at one show...and we were in there after the show had finished!

We generally dont have an issue at hillsborough ect!

Sure dont toilet your dogs in the ring but I see no issue in practising!

i've done it before normally on lunch breaks though. my son (2) stepped into an empty ring the other day at ashow and i got told to get him out although he wasn't making a noise :S should of given him the dog rofl

We have been asked to leave during lunch breaks if that ring will be used later on...

Ever since I have been showing it is inconsiderate to excerise/practice in ANY ring that still has dogs to be judged in that ring....

By that I mean when the ring has broken for lunch , waiting for another group to start or will be used for General Specials.........

Once ALL judging has been completed you have plenty of time to practice then......

I regularly see people in the ring at lunchbreaks with dogs and pups practising - long-time well known exhibitors are the ones who immediately spring to mind - so I figured it must have been okay.

It is inconsiderate IF adjoining rings are still being judged as could put dog/handler off.

I know from when I judged at Obedience Trials people were NOT permitted in any ring that was empty untill ALL rings had completed judging for the whole trial. It is very hard to get a dog to Heel correctly if someone in an adjacent empty ring is practising exercises like Recall or retrieve dumbbell as from the dog's point of view that is far more appealing than boring heel work

Seems to be different in each state. Just talking to a friend in SA who said a practice ring / using the empty ring is normal, whereas in NSW the eye daggers could kill !!!

I think a practice ring is a great idea, horse events usually have one.

Maybe not close to the ring where your judge is currently judging though.

We don't have many sweepstakes in Vic and training a puppy at the show is much different to training at home. Here I see people training before the show starts, during lunch breaks and after the group is finished. I've never seen anyone be told off for it before.

No really it would make it very hard if there is no s/s but we do not have Open shows in NSW either but most kennel clubs have show training and are willing to set up rings and have a mock show for all to have a go at....

But a "SPARE" ring might solve every one's problems !!!!!

With most shows in the middle of fairly large spaces...why would anyone need to practice within the confines of a ring compared with simply moving over to an empty space? The grass or surface is the same, we don't use mats outside or solid barriers which would create a different visual space, so practicing in the paddock beside the show venue is more or less the same.

There is no rule in Victoria prohibiting practicing in rings when they are not in use. I beleive the clubs have the right to put in place that rule should they wish to, and in some cases it's sensible if the weather isn't great, the less tromping around the better!

What irks me to no end, are those that go into the rings to toilet their dogs when there is ample acreage around to take care of that. What I also notice, is that the ones doing it, go to the ring they are NOT going to be showing in (uhm...'scuse me, but someone ELSE will be using that ring later!) to exercise their dogs. I find it lazy, and down right rude watching people do this, and have said as much, only to be glared at like as though I am the one at fault!

NO, there is no rule against using the ring to toilet the dogs, HOWEVER would these people like the rest of us to walk our dogs and let them lift or pee inside their gazebo for example and simply walk away? It's time the lazy owners stretch their legs, take their dogs for a proper walk more than 10 feet from their little personal space they have set up. We have between on average 2 and 9 dogs with us at shows any given weekend. Yes it takes time to ensure they all get walked properly and yes, we ALWAYS go the opposite direction of the rings. Only very occasionally will one of the girls piddle on the way to the ring, and the boys are not permitted to lift on the corner posts or ropes or anything else for that matter inside or outside the ring. (my other major complaint when it comes to boy dogs!) No rules say I must do this, but it's the RIGHT thing to do in my opinion!

I had to give up show training 'cos I don't get home early enough after work I miss it... But even when we were going I still practice in a finished ring, love trying out new things with my dog, offering them to friends to learn with, juniors to play with etc. Also train beforehand (rarely in an actual ring but occasionally, lots of people do it and I've never seen it become an issue... About 5 minutes before starting there is sometimes a message over the PA system asking exhibitors to vacate so the judge can set up.

I always try to do a practise run before I show to see how my dogs are moving, and what kind of mood they are in (toy, bait etc).

We used to have a monthly members comp but low attendance saw it cancelled. I believe they still run them over at KCC but I am unfortunately able to attend again due to work.

Bulla is a fairly small venue once gazebos are set up, and although outdoors at KCC is nice and spacious, indoors is incredibly crowded. Especially when Group 6 is running a breed comp on the same day as a champ show and thus using 2 rings.

Hehe, my adults get so bored practicing at home or in the backyard and lag around or are just lazy. But yeah, put them in an empty ring at a show and they spark up. It's funny how they know, isn't it??

my pup is the same you would think she has never learnt how to walk on a lead or stack get to a show and she behaves very well she knows the rings at a show mean real work not practice

You want to practice in a dead ring? Go for it. Just make sure it's not going to have BIS or SS later on.

You practice in my live ring when I'm stewarding - WATCH OUT! You shall be asked to leave the ring, and that could be an hour before the show. And it will be loud!
