Skruffy n Flea
my pets are being boarded for 10 days from tomorrow so i treated them for parasites --- i didn't do very well earlier, i *treated* the two dogs with their drontal chews; byron ate half and well, bella tried to bury hers --- retrieving both and when dishing up their dinner, i crushed up byron's bit in his bowl and bella's whole bit in hers, then i added a crushed up comfortis tab in each too! neither dog was happy with their dinner and neither of them finished... so, about an hour ago, i'm heading off to bed only to find two patches of vomit on the bed [OH left it in my capable hands, chosing to move to the 2nd bedroom *winner*] i know it was byron cuz bella was downstairs with me and when we got upstairs i found byron snuggled in his bed on the floor [he's almost always on the bed], and bella was VERY interested in the smell of his breath [which is more than a little unusual]... anyhoot, i'm up still, laundering and my question is, where did i go wrong? can i not smush up the drontal? can i not smush up the comfortis? can i not mix them together? both dogs have had both before but not at the same time and not smushed --- was smushing them the wrong thing to do? or was administering them at the same time the wrong thing to do? HALP!
Crisovar
I never dose with more than one product at a time. Some products do make dogs vomit, I like to know which ones are affected by the products and I also don't like to hit them with too much at once. Comfortis can make them vomit it is the most often seen side effect. Drontal often does too, so your dogs have had a double whammy.
Her Majesty Dogmad
I never use more than one thing at a time either. I've had dogs vomit after Drontal and I've read that Comfortis causes nausea and obviously vomiting. To cover all the parasites (except tape worms and ticks), I use Advocate - it does fleas, worms, lice and mites. My dogs all do very well on it. I did have 2 dogs that couldn't have on the skin preps because they both had allergies. I gave them a tablet I bought from the vets, had to be given twice a week for fleas and they both did well with that. For tape worms, on the first day of each quarter, I buy tablets that cover tapeworms, from the vets. Never bath the dog within 48 hours of an on the spot application. Mine eat their tapeworm tabs hidden in meatballs or cheese, haven't had many probs. I think Drontal are the really big ones? Break them up into smaller parts and put them in food. OSoSwift
I would give the flea product in this sort of senario, but would de-worm them after as they are likely to pick up fleas and worms in an environment like a boarding kennel. The Comfortis stops them bringing fleas home, and the Drontal after the visit knocks of any worms when they get home. I give mine only one preperation at a time as well. I use Advocate as well and this is tolerated very well by mine.

aussielover
Comfortis is known to cause vomiting in some dogs, especially if not given with a meal. I would also not give the 2 at the same time. Sentinel does basically everything except ticks which is handy, so it is convienient.
Skruffy n Flea
thanks aussielover, looking to use sentinel after october given that both dogs were administered the dreaded heartworm injection that time last year... i don't think it does adult fleas tho --- can comfortis be used as a one off with sentinel in the case where fleas are found? Mas1981
I do Revolution and in between doses I do comfortis, as suggested by my dermatologist, so I do Revolution, then 2 weeks later COmfortis and then 2 weeks later Revolution again etc etc... Skruffy n Flea
thanks for that mas i prefer not to use topicals because my two have an alergy propensity and topicals seemingly tend to aggravate that condition... i'm changing next month [or in november !??!] to a sentinel product that controls all parasitic infestations --- i just need to confirm whether i can supplement comfortis with the sentinel product in the case of an adult flea infestation ;)

It is tested at 10x the normal dose and they recon on the packaging that they have never had a reaction? My allergy dog is very sensitive to everything but he is good with the Revolution, I also use the cat one on my cats and the one is ultra sensitive. Drontal does make dogs vomit, both should be given with food, comfortis stinks, I wouldn't crush it- the smell probably turned your dogs off. CrazyCresties
I've always had problems with Drontal causing vomiting I use Milbemax now instead and haven't had any issues with vomiting
