Guest
ive recently got my little shiba into puppy school and he is so far doing really well with sitting, dropping, leaving treats ect... how ever... when it comes to sitting still in when the instructor is explaining the next instruction, he doesn't want a bar of it, he jumps around, whines, bites and carry's on like the world is about to end... does anyone have any tips on how I can keep him calm when the teacher talking?? Guest
My trainer is going to give me some info at our next class, he has suggested that it might be because he is over excited which I can understand but none of the other puppies act like him
corvus
Last puppy class I went to the puppies all got pig snouts to chew on while the instructor was talking. It made for very quiet and relaxed classes between exercises. They would chew them on a little rug each on leash and kept away from each other's snouts. Otherwise, I think the best you can do with a puppy is try to keep them engaged. Lots of rewards if they are doing the right thing. Some people take the puppy to time out for 30 seconds if they whinge. From what I saw of it it's a slow and tedious method for wee babies.

W Sibs
Em was like this. I bring her favorite toy to class so that can distract her while the teacher is talking... or we practice hand signal training. We weren't allow to bring pig ears or treats to puppy class. W Sibs
at this point ill take any advice... pretty much my little ike is the naughtly kid in class awww... Emmy was the bully and a complete Diva :D Maybe if your pup is like that you can try to tire him a little before class. Like have a play session or take him for a quick walk before class... so he goes to class a little bit calmer. I found this worked with Emmy. She won't act up in class as much if I tire her out just a little bit. When we get home for puppy class, she goes to her bed and have a nap too
Guest
ill give it a crack, from what the teacher said, he gets over excited and just wants to go go go lol so when it comes to actually keeping him still when she is expalining the next comand thats when he goes bonkers :D

No treats??? how did you train her then? toys? I'm surprised they expected all puppies to use toys as a reward.

corvus
Or maybe the puppy class provided treats. It's a good strategy for making sure there are no puppies in the class hanging around the owner with the steak instead of their owner with the kibble. Yes, thats true, at our puppy school we are provided with the treats. mindy is on a special diet for the moment, which means she can't have them (they are high in processed meats and fats) and has to have boiled chicken for treats instead. So I have all the puppies hanging around me now
