I've heard that if you put the dogs name on their tag, and if someone unethical finds out the dogs name, it can be easier for said person to steal/grab the dog as it's more likely to come to someone if called by name. I always thought it was an old wives tale but sometimes wonder if there could be any truth in it. Any opinions anyone? I've got a pet register tag on my dogs, nothing to identify dog, me or address etc. Is this enough to protect them?

I have these tags they are really good value. On mine I have: dogs name

My husband and my first names and surname

My mobile

Husbands mobile

Home number

ETA I like to have phone numbers on dogs. When I have found one in the past I can call the owner direct and return the dog. I also think if they are close enough to be able to read your dogs name on the tag they are close enough to have grabbed them already.

Ohh.. that's pretty good!!! I need something like that for Emmy.. she finds her tag annoying and always trying to bite it off.

Charlie and Emmy just as their name, the boyfriend and my mobile number.

But their collar also has the National Register ID tag on it too. Both are also microchipped.

BTW that is one gorgeous boy you have there. Was he bred in WA?

Thank you  When I was looking for a pup I first contacted breeders in WA, but none were not having litters for a while. Stanley came from VIC.

This is the very reason why I started this thread and would like to know too.

I'm in WA too and was curious, what exactly happens if your dog isn't registered with the council? What are the benefits of having a registered dog?

My council website (City of Cockburn) doesn't say much, but it complies with the Dog Act 1976. Rangers can do on-the-spot fines if your dog isn't registered.

My Council is the same, and I've never had a dog that wasn't registered, but I wonder what exactly we get for the $$ per year. The only info I've found is that in some councils if the dog is in the pound you get 14 days to collect it if it's registered and 7 days if it's not. But there's no info if that's the case in my council.

James' just has his name and mobile no.

Haven't lost him yet but have lost the tag  Some lovely person found it in the park and sent a text (which is a benefit of having a mobile no. I hadn't thought of - able to be texted) letting us know where they left it.

And he has his council rego tag on his collar as well.

Kiff and Sally have tags from here.

From memory, each tag lists their name and our home phone number on the front and on the rear, "microchipped" and my partner's mobile phone number.

The note about them being microchipped serves two purposes- if they're ever picked up as strays (as unlikely as that is) and they have their collars on, they can be traced back to us in two different ways (the chip contains far more details than we could've fit on a tag) and if someone was ever tempted to steal them, hopefully the fact that they're microchipped would be a little bit of a deterrent (they're both desexed anyway so I can't see how they'd be of any value to anyone else but.. )

I've got Dory's name, my mobile and my BF's mobile (he answers more often than I do).

I never thought to put she was microchipped on it. Now I have that excuse to get her a new tag I was looking for.

Ditto!

I have the ugly plastic tags with her m/chip and council regos on them, but I don't have them on her collar... She would look like she was wearing a pandora around her neck!

Not sure if there is any truth in that, but if you have a dog that is interested in strangers, then potentially a thief could still attempt to call the dog over without knowing their name. If you are at the park with your dog and you call their name, then a stranger would then know the name of your dog, regardless of whether they are wearing a tag.

I think you've just got to use common sense really...don't tie your dog up outside a shop where it is out of your sight and make sure your yard is secure from strangers too.

I have those tags too

We have on them:

"dogs name"

Ph: (my mobile no)

Mob: (husbands mobile/work no)

Vet: (vets phone no)

Microchipped/Reg

I can't see the point in having a home/landline number on there as if my dog was lost I'd be out looking for him, not sitting at home waiting.

Dog's name

'Microchipped'

home phone

mobile

vet name and number on the back.

I buy mine in brass with paint filled engraving, and I buy them big enough that the average human can see it.

I always have microchipped engraved on it as I want to hopefully appeal to a persons good sense and have them take the dog in to be scanned. There's no guarantees with that of course, but one can hope!

The reason I have my landline number is I have a message service on there so at least if I am not hearing my mobile ring (my hearing isnt to good) I can check if someone has called.
