I bought an American Staffordshire Terrier from a registered breeder in South Australia. I picked my girl up from the Hobart Airport on Friday. She's had diarrheoa for the last 30 or so hours and I'm getting a bit worried, I haven't changed her diet, the breeder told me what to feed her and how often. It's only gotten worse and I'm a 2 hour drive from my vet so if it's not necessary I don't want to rush her down for nothing. VJB Posted September 13, 2010 Share Posted September 13, 2010 (edited) I think for peace of mind, a vet visit may be necessary. Puppies can go down hill very quickly with diarrhoea, even though she is playing well at the moment. It may be as simple as stress because of the change of environment, which is common. Maybe you could have a phone call with the vet and see what they suggest. Agree with Poodlefan re withholding food. Keep up with water though. Dragging her bum could have simply been that her anus is sore/irritated from diarrhoea..and she is trying to clean/soothe it! Please do not withhold water- but do not feed her today .. Then, IF SHE IMPROVES... offer SMALL amounts of boiled rice/chicken breast for a few days..gradually working back to her normal food .ANY MORE diarrhoea- and it's off to the vet . keep in touch with your vet- dehydration is nasty Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Worming tablets are hard on the gut. Just give water - and lots of it until tomorrow. At the first signs of lethargy or depression or if you spot any blood in her diarrohea I'd be making that two hour drip. Tilly Posted September 14, 2010 Share Posted September 14, 2010 I found rice/chicken didn't really help my boy when he had the runs for the first week after I got him ... it was steamed chicken and pumpkin that made the difference. Follow advice above, but as mentioned if there's no improvement or her condition worses see the vet immediently. I hope she's well again soon... I took her to the vet, costing me over $140 in fuel and costs, vet gave her some medicine to thicken up her stool and prescribed boiled chicken and rice for a few days (Thanks guys! You were definitely right there) and sent us on our way. I let her out to go to the toilet as soon as I get home, and low and behold she poops and a LOT of worms come out. I'm incredibly angry that my 8 week old puppy has so many worms because I was told she would be wormed and vet checked before being shipped to me. The vet visit was a GOOD idea- as that many worms can irritate the gut, and you do need to use some medicine and diet to soothe things down . I'm glad you went . Poor little mite! Poor you for having to witness it! I completely agree with that, I've always treated all my dogs for worms. I was told that my pup would be wormed, vet checked and vaccinated etc etc. My sister's mutt just had puppies and I helped her look after them until they were sold and I wormed them every 2 weeks as well as the bitch. I'm just really angry with the breeder because obviously my pup was not wormed when I was told she would be. I felt so bad for her and I'm just so angry that she's had to suffer that. ellz Posted September 24, 2010 Share Posted September 24, 2010 I wouldn't be too hard on the breeder over the worms. Things happen and sometimes the worms don't respond the way they are meant to. My last Stafford litter was the wormiest litter I'd ever seen and I blame it on the fact that I changed my regime to a new one, using a different product and it was nowhere near as successful as my normal protocol. My next litters will be back to what I know and trust and hopefully, there won't be an issue. UNLESS the puppy came from one of the known mass-producing kennels of your breed, in which case, they are in it for the money and not the love. There is a certain registered breeder in SA pumping out overpriced puppies (not the one above either). No health testing, temp probs, uses unregistered dogs -yet puppies somehow have papers... Some constructive advice though. Boiled pumpkin and chicken with a little natural yogurt is good as a bland meal. Probiotics may help long term. If the pup has "severe" diarrheoa, diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours or if there is blood then I'd be heading off to the vet asap. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was going to recommend her to my sister because she's interested in a British Bulldog but I've told her not to now. I'll do the leg work for her and find a different breeder if it stops her going to the same one my dog came from. My friend was very dissapointed too and nearly cancelled her "order". She thought she was doing the right thing buying from a registered breeder and soon learnt that there were registered breeders and Ethical registered breeders. I did do some more research into the breed and registered breeders who breed Amstaffs and was pretty upset when I realised I was paying a LOT of money for mine. As she is a 'blue' pup I paid top dollar. Admittedly I went by the breeder's website and she seemed to have a lot of happy customers and happy dogs which I'm sure she does. Am I allowed to ask for copies of my pup's parents' papers? I would have gone with a different breeder but I had already paid a decent deposit and was informed that there were no refunds. So next time I will definitely do a lot more research into the breeder before I contact them about a pup.
