Dog poisoner puts lives at risk

The RSPCA says whoever killed a puppy on the Gold Coast used so much bait poison it could have claimed the life of a child or even an adult.

The organisation is appealing for help to find who threw mince heavily laced with strychnine into the backyard of a home in Mermaid Waters on August 14.

Inspector Sommer Heath-Crilley said strychnine produces some of the most agonising symptoms of any known poison, causing an excruciating death.

Ms Heath-Crilley said the owner of the nine-month-old dachshund saw it eating mince laced with a white powder in the early hours of the morning.

Within 10 minutes the dog started to convulse and had another series of fits at the vet's before dying.

"Pathology reports show he had been poisoned with an extremely high dose of strychnine which was so strong it could have killed a child or possibly even an adult," Ms Heath-Crilley said.

I would speculate that the motive was to stop the noise from the dog barking.

If that is the case it's most probably one of the close neighbors.

They should investigate the neighborhood very thoroughly.

I too would be looking at nearby neighbours.

What sort of a person has strychnine at hand?, we really do live in a sick sick world.

How horrible- and what a horrible method to use!!!I agree, you wouldn't think that this would be a common poison to get your hands on, would you, and what sort of person would choose it?! I hope that if they find this person, that the punishment will fit the crime, but I doubt it. I just hope it wasn't some sicko just wanting to witness something die in agony... As this may be the case, this person would have to be nearby to witness their handywork, so would probably live close by. And even if the reason was just to stop a dog from barking, what a hideous poison of choice...! Poor little dog.

Dog poisoners need to be caught quickly and all the dog owning neighbours of these people need to be on alert.

The statement by the RSPCA Inspector is interesting though - I wasn't aware that children were now eating raw minced meat. Ugh!

Some kids do strange things. My daughter never ate anything she shouldn't have, my son on the other hand . I was constantly on the phone to nurse on call or the poison information centre. Nothing turned out to be terribly harmfull, but he certainly kept me on my toes.
