Thought I'd post a fun little survey here because I haven't really posted any topics lately.

So can you tell me about your favourite breed(s)? How much do you know about them? Answer the questions below. I'm interested to learn about any breeds; Post even if someone has covered the breed already.

Breed name:

- Australian Shepherds.

Breed Group (gun dogs, working dogs ect):

- Working Breed, Group Five

Average life expectancy:

- Generally twelve to fifteen years, as breeders are offered a lot of health tests to improve the breed.

Height/Weight:

- Most bitches I see are around 18-19 inches give or take, and most males are 20-22 inches. The breed standard asks that quality is not to be sacrificed for size, so if your aussie is smaller is higher it's not too bad.

Exercise requirements:

- Australian Shepherds need stimulation. Physical and mental stimulation is required, they are not a breed who can left to rot in the backyard. They need company and something to do. 30min walks and games of fetch is normally enough from my experience, but they have the stamina to go all day, or are happy to cuddle on the couch and have a movie day.

Health problems:

- Australian Shepherds are known to have a few different issues but with health testing these problems can be adressed and cared for. Breeding Merles together can create double merles which can be deaf and/or blind. Other health issues include (but are not limited to) MDR1 Drug sensitivity and CEA.

Grooming:

- Aussies are a double coated breed which generally have large "pants" and require regular grooming. A weekly brush keeps them soft and keeps their coat shining and knot free.

Origin:

- Contrary to their name; they did not originate in Australia, but South America.

What were they breed for (to work live stock..ect):

- Australian "Shepherd" = Sheep Herd = to herd sheep.

Why you love the breed:

- I immediately liked the breed because of their appearance. Four different colours (black, red solid, red merle, blue merle) with options for white and copper highlights, different tail types (full tails, short bob tails and anything in between), different eye colours (deep brown, hazel, blue, green and marbling of multiple colours at once). Now that I own the breed, I love their energy, their expressions, their loyalty and intelligence. They are such cuddly happy dogs all the time and mine all try their damn hardest at anything I ask of them.

Any dislikes about the breed?:

- They bark alot during play. it's like a happy seal.

- They are reserved with strangers, which can lead to fear and agression toward strangers.

Temperament:

- they are a "best friend" breed. I'm amazed by my own dogs' bombproof temperaments and willingness to please.

Accepted coat colours:

- Solid Black, Solid Red, Red Merle, Blue Merle. All with or without copper and white. The amount and placing of white has restrictions though.
