Ultrasound

Hi all,

I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me when is the best time during the pregnancy to have an ultrasound done.

I have a bitch that was assumed to be pregnant last time she was mated but there were no puppies in the end. I have done a return mating to the same proven male but would like to know for certain whether or not she is pregnant. The bitch is a maiden.

We usually ultrasound at 5 weeks but with a bitch that may be re-absorbing it is a good idea to do it at 4 weeks and again at 6-7 weeks.

from 4 weeks. It is easier to count at 4 weeks but you see more detail in an individual pup at a later date.

Depends on how good your vet is and how good their ultrasound machine is too, my vet has an ancient dinosaur of a machine and doesnt like to scan until pups are at least 5 weeks

My Vet highly recommeds 28 days for the first ultrasound.

Maybe contact your own personal vet and see what he or she recommends.

It may depend on their capabilities in regards to machines, training etc.

As stated it depends on the quality of the machine / scanner, 28 days is the time to ultrasound in most cases.

I generally wait until 35 days. Allows for a few days grace if did not ovulate until a day or so after mating

Thank you all for your replies.

I will be taking her to Monash (vic) I've heard they have a new machine, and they are very experienced at this sort of thing. Fingers crossed for the 7th Oct for some images to appear on screen.
