Royal Shows The Safety Of Our Dogs

The rules say Must be benched & in public view at all times, BUT there is no one there to police this rule.

I say do what feels right for your dog. If you can tell it is grumpy then keep it on the bench & away from the publics hands.

Many times I have had to stop the public from coming under the rail to pat my dogs while I was sitting next to it and say No he is tired or whatever.

Most accept this and go away.

I know of several people that have their dogs in covered trolleys ALL DAY and not on display for the public.

This was mentioned to the secretary in the dog Pavillion and still the dogs were not put on display for the rest of the day.

I for one say there is a huge difference between a Royal and the average dog show.

How may paying public come through the turnstiles of a Royal everyday ?.

How many of the public come to the average weekend dog show ?.

Yes of course we are responsible for our own dogs but in this day and age we need better security than has been provided in the past.

I just believe that a a dog stolen from behind a barrier and locked away proves that the security is not good enough.

This can apply to all Royals where we and our dogs have direct contact with the public.

At everyday Agricultural shows we have close contact with our dogs as we are usually sitting with them around the ring provided, and they our within our reach.

Not always so at Royals.

the melbourne royal last year was complete and utter chaos. yes they said that we had to have them on display at all times but they also did not have adequate caging for the dogs in our area. there was just bays nothing else. when it came time to go to the area to show, everyone took their trolleys and then we sat in the assembly area with wall to wall people, when it came time for my dog to go into the ring i missed my call due to not being able to get through the wall to wall traffic, i missed it by 30 seconds the steward would not allow me to go in even though my class was not being judged yet. on the way there i got abused by two old ladies i was politely trying to get to the assembly area but did not make it.

in my opinion badly organised and no security whatsoever, open bays so we didn't know this was going to be the case, it had just been done up after we all got the arse out of there (dogsvictoria) the year before and for years, they'd always had cages for the dogs to be put in.

we don't really like entering royals, when we do, we always make sure the two of us are there (my mother and me) so we can cover each other when we want to go to the loo or whatever, not for even a second do we take our eye of our dogs and on occasion, having a tiny breed i've even taken my dog to the loo with me. lol i know you aren't supposed to do it.......but there is no one there to tell you otherwise.

At Brisbane there is someone that walks around (for some of the day) and makes sure that dogs arent covered up and that all trolleys in the walk way are folded up.

I dont understand how people are missing there call :birthday: I only have Brisbane royal experience to go on but they usually call ages ahead of time and you if you can see what its going to be like getting to the assembly area so go down closer earlier. Atleast then when it is time for you to go to the assembly area you are closer down have as many people to fight to get past.

There is very little room around the rings and what room there is, is filled by general public.

There needs to be an assembly area for exhibitors and their dogs ONLY.

Sometimes you can't hear because of the crowd of people/exhibitors other times you can't get through.

Melbourne is the biggest Royal, 40+ Great Danes all trying to get through the crowd and into the ring - very hard task!

Early in the day there may be some one patrolling the dog area but they don't really enforce the rules, eg dogs must be on display.

The PA system in the dog benching area is not very good so you can't excatly hear what is being said, so unless you or some one with you or next to you

checks what is going on in the rings then it is quite easy to miss your call at the Melb royal.

Why can't they employ some one in a Uniform to go to the dog benches and tell people that such as such breed will be judged in approx 10 minutes, then they can escort the exhibitors to the ring through the crowds.

Surely a teenager wouldn't doing that for some money??

The Melb Royal rules this year say that baby puppies must be on display all day too. It is the first year they have offered the baby puppy class, and I really think they should not force the babies to be on display for 8+ hrs! Even those only entered in the evening sweepies must be benched and on display all day.

Its simple if you dont want your nany on display all day dont take it!

I dont take nanys to shows. I dont even know what they are.

I dont think it is *heathy* for a baby to be on display for 9 hrs. The Royals have decided to run the baby puppy class, presumably to get more entries, so they should have the responsibility for creating rules that look after the welfare of the babies.

wt Sydney, they did the right thing and babies only had to stay for half the day. Melbourne are making babies who are entered in the sweepstakes be on display for longer than adult dogs entered in breed classes!!

They have just introduced baby puppy class for breed days but they have had baby Sweeps for the past 2 years so it's not really the first time babies are at the Melbourne Royal for a full day.

i really think it wasn't fair that the steward wouldn't let me in, when the class wasn't on yet, i paid 20 something dollars like everyone else to be there, and he didn't let me in the line up to go into the bloody ring. i should have written them a letter complaining about that. there was still enough time for me to get inbetween the other ladies but he just wouldn't let me in!!!

thats put me off entering again after that experience it was soooo badly run

Thats terrible!! You should have brought it to the attention of the show officials...

Including all the other things that go with attending, I'm sure it would have cost you way more than your $20 entry fee....

Encountered one idiot yesterday - was minding a dog for a friend while she took her gear & baby down to the ring (she was coming back for the bitch). This bitch's bench was unfortunately right where the barriers were separate to provide the exit. Anyway, this guy comes up and asks "can I pat the dog?" I said "she's not my dog so probably best not to". His response was "Not your dog? Cool" and started patting the dog on her head. Before I could say anything else he walked off but I was left stunned for a moment about his rudeness. Couldn't believe it!

Nessa was bored most of the day so slept, however when people came over to look at her I'd get her up and most were all " no no don't wake her!", she was only curled up because she couldn't do anything else lol and loooovef the meet and greets, especially the kids who were her own height

If you don't want your babies on display all day, don't enter them - very simple really.

As for security, i have always been with a group, so we have always left someone behind to watch the dogs/stuff.

No different to what we do at KCC, or Bulla or any other show.

You need to protect your dogs and your valuables.
