Tick Treatment , What Do U Reccomend?

I would not reccomend shoo tags for paralysis ticks....

I personally find frontline spray the best for paralysis ticks, Once applied lasts for 3 weeks and if you see a tick you can kill it by spraying with the frontline.

The spray adhears to the coat and is quick drying - I believe the safest thing to use around kids as there is no oily residue on the dogs coat like there is after using a top spot.Remember you must apply the spray all over your dog.

If you decide on using a top spot (Advantix /frontline plus)please note you need to apply at least 2 days before you leave and apply every 2 weeks.

Just wondering why you wouldn't recomend shoo tag for paralysis ticks? The reason I looked into (& found shoo tag) is that I wasn't comfortable putting nasty chemicals on my dog. There is a lot of controversy out there about what these chemicals actually do to your dog. Here are a few examples:

Had several people in our area have used them and their dog got tick paralysis and are covered in fleas, one GSD had tick paralysis within 2 weeks of being treated - they now get frontline sprayed every 3 weeks and have not had a tick since.

Paralysis ticks kill more dogs and cats than any of the preventions available.

Frontline spray adhears to the coat so once the dog sheds the coat it falls off.

Just so you know fipronil the active ingredient in frontline spray is used on the vege's we eat - Registered crops range from row crops such as rice, corn, potatoes and small grains to specialty crops such as ornamentals, mangoes and chili peppers.

I would recomend Shoo Tag to anyone - the best thing about it is that you don't use chemicals. Just google Shoo Tag.

They are little plastic tags that you attach to your dogs collar. I purchased them only because they come with a money back guarantee so although I was sceptical I had nothing to lose. I used to pull about 10 ticks off my dog a week during the summer months. since using these tags I haven't seen a single tick

Maybe in conjunction with a chemical treatment.

Perhaps they are ok for bush ticks though.

Advantix, frontline are pretty good but don't work 100% I have had a paraylsis tick on my dog even though we were using frontline every 2 weeks. The most important thing to do is to check everyday for ticks, in conjunction with a good preventative treatment.

The risk of a serious reaction to FL or advantix is very low, much lower than your dog getting a tick in a high tick area.

Interesting but not surprising in that somethings work for some people whilst others don't. My local pet shop has mentioned that they are constantly getting people in complaining that Frontline doesn't work. Shoo Tag has worked a treat for me and a number of friends of mine have had the same result.

The main thing for me was I really hated using chemicals and after doing some research online I was horrified as to what these chemicals I was using on my dog actually did to him. I also did some research into fipronil and studies suggest "fipronil has been classified as a Group C (Possible Human) Carcinogen based on an increase in thyroid follicular cell tumors in both sexes of the rat".

Each to their own I guess but I'm very happy to have found shoo tag, it works for me and actually saves me quite a bit of money too.

I agree that there is nothing out there that will 100%, 100% of the time. I think people should just use what they are happy with but it is good to be informed of the options as well as the dangers of using some chemicals.

I have to agree with frontline 'top spot' not being very good, my cats still had fleas while being treated every 2 weeks and they are indoor only cats.

BUT Frontline SPRAY is excellent you just have to remember to spray the whole dog /cat every 3 weeks for ticks .

my dogs run in the bush everyday with me of a morning. At this time of the year i use advantix every 2 weeks, i have kelpies and have a foster border collie x at the moment here. i check them religiously everyday...We are in a p tick area, and my OH has come home with one on his singlet, but so far i have never found one on the dogs. Checking them is the best double check you can do. and that means in between their paws and everything

That IS the best way to prevent tick paralysis. We've had SO many cases this last few weeks its ridiculous - all of the dogs so far have been dogs treated with advantix, Frontline spray or the shoo tags - they still went down hard - As far as I'm concerned, nothing is 100% effective and checking twice daily or more when in 'tick country' is the best defence
