Toilet Training Issues

G'day everyone...

As many of you know...I got Buffy, my Beagle last week and although things are generally fantastic, I have a small hiccup im having trouble and hoping someone might be able to offer some advise.

I swear shes playing head games with me!!

Anyway, long story short..

One day, she has a perfect record, going to the toilet outside every single time..

Then theres the next day.

I will take her out after sleeping, play, eating, drinking....and she will go to the toilet without an issue.

Then she will come back inside and go to the toilet again. Im talking mins later. Never in the same spot.

Once, she went to the toilet outside and came inside. In that next hour she went inside (or over me as I race her outside) 6 times.

Of course, as im watching her so closely, I catch her as she is starting her squat, grab her and race her outside but by that stage

she has been on carpet or she lets it go as im running out the door carrying her.

I clean all "Accidents" with special cleaner made for such.

She gets praised like hell when she goes outside.

One day she is perfect, the next she does above, the next day she is perfect etc.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do to overcome this issue?

She doesnt go to the toilet all night? Could this have something to do with it?

(the first few nights I would wake every 2-3 hours to take her out but she wouldnt go. Even after being out and waiting for 20 odd minutes. She would just not go and then go straight back to bed/crate. The last few nights, I wake at 6am and she still sleeps so I wake her at about 6:30 and take her out and she always goes.)

She starts puppy school tonight so am going to run it past them there but thought I would also see what you knowledgeable people had to say too.

Thanks in advance for any advise etc you might be able to offer.

Could she have a uti?

They do urinate a lot if they have one.

When my puppy started urinating frequently, it was due to a uti.

Otherwise, it kinda sounds pretty normal to me, i mean, you've only had her for a few days. We were told at puppy school, a few accidents a day is normal for the first 2 weeks. obviously it is not desirable, but you're bound to have a few accidents in the first week or so unless you literally watch pup 24/7

She may think that wee wees= reward and not yet put together that only wees OUTSIDE gets the reward. So maybe in a way she is trying to please you?

If she doesn't go in the crate, maybe pop her into the crate for a bit after coming back inside.

You aren't leaving her outside long enough!! I discovered I was doing the same when my boy was 4mths and starting to pee in the house. Take her outside, and watch her, and ask her to toilet. You soon learn the signs of a pup with a full bladder and when they hadn't gone fully. My boy would walk with a waddle and his tummy would bloat out and he'd tuck his bum under himself. Often he would toilet once so I'd take him inside thinking he was done and he'd pee again in the house.. so we'd go outside and nothing would happen, back inside and he'd pee. I found with him what we had to do was toilet him, take him inside then repeat the process straight away by going outside. Within a week it got to the point we'd be outside, all i'd have to say was uhuh, you're not finished yet, go toilet, and he'd look at me, sigh loudly(yes he did) and go to the loo again. He would go up to 3 times in one trip. Breaking his focus worked wonders because he'd go ohh hang on i DO need to go and soon realised one trip out was easier than 3-4 it took previously  I became so switched on when it came to watching for when he needed to go, even OH has know idea how I know.

Now at 11mths old, he'll fly to the back door almost with his legs crossed in the mornings :) and go in one hit. We timed him for 2 minutes the other night after he'd been inside all day  He's gone from being totally unreliable to having a brilliant bladder 98% of the time. He even has a poop routine now that I am yet to see him break. :D

I wouldn't say that her inconsistency is due to the fact she doesn't go overnight. Your pup is only a baby, you can't expect things to be perfect straight away and she still only has a teeny weensy bladder. It takes months for a dog to be trustworthy in terms of toilet training. My boy slept through the night within a week of coming home, and he still did exactly what yours is doing now. She is only a baby and she sure as heck isn't playing head games, it's normal puppy behaviour... says she who was being driven mad by the exact same issues :)

Thanks for your replies!!

She actually has a vet appointment this Friday...just to be checked over and so I can talk to them about flea and tick and worming preventions etc as im having a hard time getting my head around all the products etc. She will see the vet again in 3 weeks to get next vaccination and I have to microchip her too as the breeder said she hates micro chipping them so early as the needle is so big and suggested we get it done just before she is 12 weeks.

I guess then I will get some results from her tests shes having this Friday. I dont know what tests are being done in a vet check but I know I have to take a stool sample in.

Otherwise, it sounds like im experiencing exactly what Bundys mum has experienced. I did think that was the problem at first or that I was praising her too early and then distracting her frmo finishing properly so now I stay out there longer and dont praise her until I know she has finished...well...think she has finished. I thought that was the problem at first as the next day there were no accidents....but then today its back to the former.

Seems to be one day perfect, the next day far from.

She has never pooped inside. Thats a good thing.

I guess I just want to ensure I am doing nothing wrong in regards to her toilet training.

I know its not her fault she is doing this so of course I wonder what I am doing wrong.

I know shes not playing head games with me, I was just trying to be funny.

FAIL hehehe
