Prag
Hi I was wondering if anyone has any experiences of having a Sheltie and a Doberman together?
Parkeyre
With proper training, socialisation and close supervision I cannot see a problem.
cowanbree
Depends on the individual dog more than the breed. I am a sheltie breeder and have 2 big dogs as well. It works under supervision as the aussies are totally submissive to the shelties. Shelties play completely different from the aussies, they don't do the wrestling games the aussies love which is fortunate as the 15kg difference in size can be an issue. Dobes and shelties have very different temperaments though
mita
I know of a builder & his wife who own 2 dogs. His dog is a doberman & his wife's is a tibetan spaniel. Purebreds from good breeders who socialise their puppies/dogs beautifully. He reckons it's the best team, ever, not just because the 2 dogs get on fine. But even for security on their property. The tibbie is great at hearing/seeing anything suspicious. Only time it barks. Then the dobe wanders out to take a look (tho' is really a big sweetie). Any stranger up to no good, would then think better of it.
moosmum
4 dobes and 2 yorkies work out fine here, big and little are not the problem.I need to keep 2 female dobes separated, both very dominant girls who were not raised together and are fine with others as long as they are recognised as top dog. Also good with chooks ,cats and horses.
jacqui835
Well right now, I have my male entire doberman living alongside two papillons. If you're the leader and accepted by all, I see no reasons why you would have any problems. The papillon male is the eldest by quite a bit, and he does growl when the dobe (the youngest) approaches him when he has a toy, food or a cosy sleeping spot. We don't correct that, but anything more than that (he has tried to charge the doberman a few times) we immediately chastise both, get in the middle of them and demand their undivided attention. My dobe has never stared at a small dog though like it was a prey animal, or started a fight with any dog. I have seen other large dogs look at the papillons like they want to hunt and kill them, and if my dog had ever looked at them this way, I don't think I would ever have been able to trust him around them. Remarkabull
I have a 6month old male dobe and he lives with 4 other dogs of varying size and breeds. The smallest is 3.5kg and he is probably the most outgoing and feisty of them all. The smaller dogs tell the Dobe off all the time. He often treads on their feet (accident) and they yelp and then snap at him. The only problem is that because he is so much bigger than they are he sees it as a bit of a game. They might be getting really cranky and he thinks it's the best fun ever. I have had Dobes in the past and they have all had solid, stable temperaments and were generally very good with other dogs, if somewhat disinterested in them. Prag
Hey guys, Thanks for the info. I have Sheltie at the moment who is 6 months and a little bit down teh track I woudl like to get a Doberman as well. I have worked hard to socialise my Sheltie and make sure he sees me as the pack leader. When I first got him he was a little bit apprehensive around other dogs and in teh first class of puppy school he stayed near my feet but after that he was the one starting all the play with the other dogs. Now he is good he will say hello to other dogs and when an older dog growls or something to tell him they have had enough he will roll on his stomach so he seems good with other dogs. I was just worried about a Doberman being a bit rough with him but I imagine as long as I impose rules from when the Dobe is young I woudl not have too much trouble...I know Raiden my Sheltie would love to have another doggy friend. Is anyone aware of a good Doberman breeder in VIC?

She had to be taught when we first got her (as a 4 year old) but she knows the words "gentle" and "enough" and we can safely leave her alone with the cat without any problems. On the other hand - any feral cat is chased off like any intruder would be.
