Bland Diets

i am happy with optimum, but mollie was on it for 1 week and was not adapting to it 2-3 runny poos a day,i did not want to harm her by keeping her on it and thought she maybe intolerant to it, my other pets adapted to it within 3 days. will keep up the bland diet till she is better, then slowly introduce dry food.

A week to adjust to a home after a pet shop  and a puppy farm :D isn't a lot of time for one so young. Yep, the optimum may not agree with her and obviously you should feed her what suits her and you, just saying don't write it off, a runny butt in a baby that's been through so much really isn't all that surprising.

thank you, she has done 2 poos today, heaps less than the past few days, hopefully once she is back on dry biscuits she will be ok, vet said to start adding biscuits to the rice/chicken food tomorrow - 1/2 cup rice, 1/2 cup chicken, 1/4 cup biscuits, then on saturday straight biscuts, but i am inclined to keep the rice/chicken up for a few more days to get her back on track even more and get some food in her tummy. thanks again for your advice

cause when she was at the vet on monday he said he could not see any poodle in her at all, he was the vet who done their health checks and all their vet care, he says she is the spit of her mom and he has cavs himself so he would know what they look like and their needs.

really curious on how the vet would know what the pups Mum looked like when you said in another thread you got her from a pet shop :o

cause he looks after the parents and done the health checks on the pups, he knows them well

How is the pup today?

she has done two poos today and is much better, thank you for your concern, she had a few biscuits with her rice/chicken with lunch. will give her a few more biscuits tonite and gradually increase the biscuits and decrease the rice/chicken over the next few days as i don't just want to stop one to start the other

thank again

pet shop were i bought her told me to feed her what ever i wanted to feed her, as they had recently changed her diet so it would not harm her to change.

Has she been wormed since you had her?

I'd not rate petshops as high on the list of sources of advice on puppy nutrition. Basically, once you've parted with your cash, unless they promote what they sell, they really don't give a damn.

yes she had been wormed, when i bought her i took her straight down to my local vet, he done a check of her for me and informed me that he was the one who microchipped, wormed, vaccinated and done health checks on all the pups from this litter, when i took her back for her booster vaccination she was wormed again, vet changed her to hills science - apparently it is a better food for them, the sloppy poos started pretty much straight away from her lunch time feed, i put it down to vaccinations from that morning, i am thinking that it is the hills science that is causing her problems, i need to find a food that is not going to upset her tummy, she was fine till after lunch today when i reintroduced some hills biscuits, not even 1/8 cup mixed in with bland diet, but tonite she was runny again, how long can they be on a bland diet, what is the best dry food for puppies??

They stay on bland food till you think it's ready for them to get off it. I've only done the boil chicken and rice with Charlie till his poo got firmer and then slowly introduced him back to his usual diet (raw).. it took about a week and a half before he was fully off it. I also fed him yoghurt.

All pups are different. when it comes to dry food. We went through so much dry food that suits Charlie and we discovered he only ate Hill BUT only if it's been aired out for 24 hours.. the smell is was too strong for him to eat.

Emmy, on the other hand, hates Hills. We put her on Advance Puppy Plus and she loves it and is doing really really well on it. Even Charlie loves it and no longer eats Hills.

I had mine on Chicken and Rice and even just rice and he still had the runs and was bad.... he even had small amounts of blood. We spent many a time at the vet trying different foods and being tested for all sorts. He had no bugs, gastro or giardia(?). He just had a sensitive tummy and a slight aversion to chicken. (he can tolerate small amounts). He is now on Royal Canin Intestinal dry which we purchase through the vet. We tried, Advance, Hills, etc but in the end Royal Canin intestinal is for him. The vet has told us to leave him on it (it is usually for short bursts when a Dogs stomach is real bad) but the vet is of the mind that it contains the nutrients he needs and is not giving him the runs - so why take him off it. We had to reduce the dosage due to his being a pup and he is a large boy (8 month Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) is 7.5kg when my 20 month old CKCS is 6.4kg but the vet wasn't concerned.

I would say, if your dogs runs are not getting better that seeing a vet is for the best and don't give up - we spent many a sleepless night with a small pup needing to go out to the toilet several times a night. He is not quite firm.

ok back to add - my Breeder had Porthos on Advance kibble and raw beef mince - he was sick with the runs from the moment we brought him home and when we saw the vet, he was not happy to have him on raw mince. We tried the kibble alone and he was still bad and then went onto other things. The RC intestinal was almost instantaenous...within 24 hrs he was firming up. My older Cav is on RC Cavalier Specific and is loving it :D

mollie is doing much better, she is on optimum puppy chicken flavour, and she is firmer this time round, the bland diet has worked for her, i think maybe that is was the hills science that was the problem as she was sloppy on this and really soft on the optimum- hence the reason i switched, all our pets use optimum and usually only take a few days to switch over and all is good, but mollie was not, vet said hills was better so i listened to them and in fact made her worse than b4.

but this time round on the optimum she is doing well - so far, thank you every one for your advice
