luffy4688
We only practiced on leash walks around the house before Bailey was fully vaccinated. After he was fully vaccinated, we brought him for about 15 minutes walk which slowly increased as he got older. He started attending puppy school not long after, then doggy daycare around 4 months old. Before he was fully vaccinated, we did carry him out for walks. We wanted him to get used to the sights, smells n sounds of the surroundings. Traffic, trams, people etc. We also brought him for short trips in the car to get him used to the car. If you wind down the window a little, he'll be able to slowly take it the different smells as well. All these could be mentally stimulating for a puppy. Regarding the fear period, we still went about on our normal routine in regards to walks etc. We just keep an eye out to make sure he's not uncomfortable about anything. Archerlove
I was thinking this same thing this week. As Sidsam has only just had his first round of vacc I am not sure if it is safe to take him out. There are a lot of big dogs in our area, and my little Staffy might feel quite intimidated by them as we walk past. i would carry your puppy if you do take him out. Most puppies have NO immunity after the first vax only. Are you in a parvo area? Wait until he has finished the course of vaccination How do you know if you`re in a `Parvo Area`? SIDSAM
Not sure if we are in a parvo area, but we got him the injection for it just to be safe.
tlc
All 4 of mine from the moment they came to live with me went with me everywhere possible. The only places we steered clear of before they were 16 weeks old was highly populated dog areas and the beach (parvo can live in sand for a long time) Mine only had off lead excersise as pups and short training sessions with the lead on. All attended puppy school from 8 weeks onwards. I spoke to my local vet at the time of each being a pup to find out if there had been any parvo cases in the district and there had been none. Since then we have had a few cases of parvo so I might be more wary if I was to get another puppy. The socialization over vaccination is an ongoing debate but I think sensibly tackled you can have a happy medium.

Do you have any friends who have vaccinated dogs that you could socialize your pup with. The earlier the better with the breed you have. Have you visited the Stafford thread they are a friendly bunch and I'm sure will give you tons of sound advice on the best way to go about it. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=50264
SIDSAM
Not really sure there are many members in the Cairns area.
aussielover
Re Parvo area- ask your vet. In my area there hasn't been very many cases of parvo, maybe one or two over the last couple of years, usually in rescue puppies, so the risk of the environment being contaminated is relatively low. Regardless, the puppy should receive the full course of vaccination (2-3 depending on what vaccine). But to be absolutely safe, don't let puppy walk around outside untl 2 weeks after the final vaccination.
