Time Off Work For Desexing Lab Puppy

Hi there

This might be a bit of a strange question...

My lab puppy will be 6 months old in a couple of months time, so I want to book her in soon to get desexing.

DH was also planning on take a week off in spring to clear the yard and planting some trees before we do a renovation. So I thought it might be good to do this around the same time, so someone is home full time with her.

Is she likely to out of it for a few days, or back to her energetic self pretty soon afterwards? I'm worried she'll be tempted to get in amongst DH's work when she should be resting.

Thanks :-)

I wouldn't be spaying her so young but if this is the decision you have made, then having her spayed on a Friday so she has two days with you home (assuming you don't work weekends ) is generally quite sufficient.

When I've had younger bitches spayed prior to rehoming they're back to normal within 12 hours - usually I don't have bitches spayed until they're 6 or 7 (after show and breeding career is done) and even the "older" ones are back to normal within 24-36 hours.

My dogs are never out with the free run of the yard when we're not home, so if she has run of the yard when you go to work then perhaps an extra day or two supervision would be wise? Or confine her for a couple more days incase she gets in to her head to chase birds and climb the fence :)

She'll probably be back to herself in 48hrs if my cyclone is anything to go by! We didn't have anyone home full time when our fellow was done last week at 11 months, and he was fine. Just made sure that he had a cone on his head to prevent too much licking. Although with a few days he worked out how to lick with the cone on!!

Thanks guys. Our vet said 6 months, but I'm happy to wait longer if it's better.

It's common for vets to recommend 6 months. I tried to go with breeders recommendations and left him until 11 months until a few things led us to get it done. If it wasn't for his surge in hormones and his change in attitude he'd still have his bits!

I just took the Friday off work so I could have a long weekend with Tilly. She had the surgery on the Thursday, golden retreiver she was 6 months old.

She was sick that night, bit off colour the next day, back to her normal boisterous self on the Saturday.

Emmy was back to herself as soon as she woke up from the operation apparently. When I took her home, she was doing zoomies and jumping off things the minute we let her out in the backyard to do her business... I had her done on Friday, so I could have the weekend with her to supervise her. She was good.. she forgot she had surgery and she was too busy to lick her stitches. My worries was it has been raining, so I didn't want her stitches to get wet.

I gave up trying to keep her calm and rested after a few hours though.

Charlie I took a few days off.. but he was fine when he got home too. But, sooked the whole 10 days when he had the stitches... he never licked it or anything, but he knew it was there and he didn't like it.

With a large retriever I would wait till at least 12 months but probably closer to 18 months for desexing.

Totally agree if you can guarantee that she won't get pregnant while on heat.

The 1st article was enough for me to let Tilba have one heat b4 spaying.

When she was spayed she had to have the bucket on her head until the stitches dissolved because she wouldn't leave them alone. I had to watch her all the time, she spent a lot of time either in her crate or on her inside bed. Didn't want to risk any complications.
