Eastern Suburbs Dog Club - Centennial Park

When Jager is old enough and i will probably wait until after he is desexed i want to start taking him to obedience training (he has covered all the basics in puppy school) but i think it will be a good opportunity for us to bond, for him to socialise, and hopefully teach him that the world doesnt revolve around him (only my world does)

Is anyone a member? What do you think of it? What sizes are the classes?

Does anyone else go to another dog club in the eastern suburbs that they can recommend?

I am. Though I haven't had much opportunity to get there recently.

I like it, they are lovely and friendly.

The classes are pretty big, but I have only found that annoying if there is an idiot in the class (one NQR guy springs to mind!).

I am in the first level- you have to do a beginners or puppy class first to get there, so that tends to weed out most people who don't take it seriously.

For socialising your pup, it's great.

Eta: I haven't been able to find any other decent classes in this area.

I would start in the adult beginners and go from there. But the dog has to be over 6months so we will have to wait for a month or so.

The only problem i have with Eastern Suburbs Club is that they run early morning Sundays but Sundays are the only days that i can catch up with my family (usually about once a month) so i would be missing a few classes due to that. I was hoping to find one that ran on Saturdays. I dont mind early mornings, just that Sundays arent very convientent.

I know what you mean, Sundays aren't very convenient for me either.

Sadly, there isn't much else around nearby. I looked for years and you have to travel quite a bit further.

With the beginners class you need to attend the 6 week block (though you can miss a week or 2),

but once you graduate to 1st class (& everyone does) you can go whenever you want. Once a month, or even once a year, as long as you maintain your membership.

Aside from Beginners, progression through classes is by tests/trials, not by attendance.

So missing classes for your family visits wouldn't be problem.

Also, the class starts at 9am and you are done by 10.

Oh i get it now. I just assumed all class levels were in blocks of 6-8 weeks with a test at the end. But if is just the beginners class and then when i progress i can go as i please that would be perfect.

Well than thats fine, i can get myself organised for the beginners class.

So do the instructors tell / suggest to you when they think you are ready to take the test to progress to the next level or do you just nominate yourself?

It's entirely up to you, but the instructors are all very approachable and happy to give advice.

Eastern subs is a great friendly club and has wonderful volunteer instructors, most of whom are very accomplished triallers/agility/obedience. You can take a test to go up a level whenever you think your dog is ready.

I think Northern and Western subs run Saturday classes if you want to travel.

Thanks Schnauzer, but i think Eastern Suburbs will work out after all. I just assumed that it was like set weeks that you had to attend, but if i can just come and go as i please then it is fine.

I used to be on the committee and have been a member for many years, but only attend occasionally as my dogs are pretty well behaved. :D

There is an initial joining fee and then membership is $10 pa and classes are $3 per week. You will need to take a current vaccination certificate to join. Have fun!

I used to be a member and had lots of fun there (and remember meeting you there once upon a time schnauzer!)..

I really enjoyed it! We got up a few levels which was really fun.

The only other dog training groups in the area is at Leichhardt. But I found that a bit hectic. Eastern Suburbs is a bit more relaxed and chilled.

Check the website for the new member registration days (every second weekend I think?), get there about 8.30 with your vaccination cert, $30 and you can fill out the forms when you get there.

If your lead is not suitable you will be asked to purchase one of the clubs standard issue ones (cotton webbing) before you can take part. I think they look for if they are strong enough and not retractable.

Each week you pay $3, each year you can renew for $10.
