Puppy Mounting Problems

My 14 month old beagle x jack russell has started mounting every dog in his sights. I've heard this is a sign of dominance but I don't really understand his need to dominate ALL the other dogs at the local off-leash park. He's mounted dogs from mastiff crosses, staffies, samoyds, terriers and even german shepherds! . Is there a way for me to stop this horrible and unnecessary behaviour? And he's also been desexed so that's not an issue here.

I don't want my little zoomer to be known as the randy boy of the park!

I feel I should also mention his playing technique with the other dogs too. He tends to be a stirrer and nips a lot too. He'll run up to a dog/puppy, get its attention by teasing it then he zooms off when it starts to chase. If the dog/puppy stops, Zeus comes back for another turn and this continues until he gets bored and moves on to another dog. I've also noticed that he tends to be quite rough when playing too and will egg the other dogs on until they're all nipping at each others' necks and rearing up and are in all quite rough. Is this too much rough play or is it just what dogs do? This whole socialising at off leash parks is a new thing for me and I'd like to make sure I'm doing it right by my dog and the others at the park.

Hi- at 14 mths your DOG is no longer a puppy :D

What training do you do with him?

he sounds as if he needs reminding that he needs to be a responsible dog citizen

Until his behaviour improves, perhaps do heaps more controlled leash walks ..at least twice a day, obedience classes, and teach him games at home . maybe also look at enlisting the help of a trainer , who comes to your home?

My worry is that he will attempt to mount a dog who reacts aggressively

I agree with persephone.

Mounting is a very undesirable behaviour which you should stop immediately for both his safety and that of other dogs. What if he mounts a dog with a back injury?

I would do lots more obedience training with him, maybe also start TOT and NILIF (see K9pro website).

When he does go to mount a dog make sure you stop him immediately, i woul put him back on leash and then do some obedience exercises.

I'm sorry but I can't stand dogs that do this (had some bad exeperiences in the past) , especially when the owner seems to think it is funny and/or doesn't bother to remove the dog, though i'm not saying that is what i think you do  You are obviously concercned and seeking advice here which is great

I actually witnessed an attack and big fight the other day started by inappropriate mounting, so probably best to stop this behaviour ASAP.

I hope some professional trainers can give you advice, there are a few that visit the puppy forums and help us out when we need it!

If the behaviour persists i would seek the services of a professional.

Bring him to my place - China will have him for lunch if he tries it with her

No more off leash exciting situations for him until he has learned to respect you, your instructions for him to stop whatever he's doing and come back to you.
