Pain Relief After Desexing

 Share

Recommended Posts

My puppy, Akira, was desexed today and she's been fairly quiet and groggy all evening. In the past half hour she's started whining in pain, and I'm wondering if there's something we can do for her. We weren't given pain killers by the vet.

Any suggestions?

I ask for pain relief for every dog I get desexed so ring your vet and ask them for it.

Don't recommend you get Rymadil but there are others that are just as good.

The dog shouldn't be left in pain so give your vet a ring.

Was she given a pain relief injection during her surgery??

we give all our patents a pain relief injection during surgery which lasts for 24 hrs, if we feel the animal will need more for when they are at home, we will prescribe only a few days of tablets

Same as us.

If she was desexed the same day, it's quite possible it's just her reaction to the anaesthetic. She should be much better this morning.

I think the whining is normal on the day, as they recover from surgery. As has already been said - the medications administered should last 24 hours. Where my guys have neede additonal pain meds after surgery we have always been given Tramadol and told to not be afraid to use it (and I wasn't  )

My boy was desexed last Wednesday. We had the same thing happen when he came home. He cried non stop for about 5 hours and was then ok. A couple of times he cried during the night, but that was only when he forgot he couldn't move like he normally can.

A week later he's back to normal *sigh*

We were given pain killers to give to Emmy after her op.. but we never gave any to her. She never once looked like she was in pain. In fact, she didn't even look like she had surgery. She was running down the corridor of the vet when we went to pick her up... she's weird.

Charlie sooked for the whole 10 days he has the stitches..

She should have been given a long-acting pain relief injection during surgery. If you have any concerns you should call the vet. My baby girl wasn't very impressed with me for days after coming home, she just laid on her bed and rested. She got over it though!

This was my thought too. My previous avatar girl (bhcs) had numerous GA's and even for ones where there had been no surgery, she'd whine as though distressed/in pain as she came out of the affects of the anaesthetic.

I agree that dogs shouldn't be left in great pain, but some discomfort is preferable as this is what stops them doing things when they shouldn't, for the sake of healing. They aren't like us, where we can be told "avoid doing this or this". Dogs will do what they FEEL they can do.

Check with your Vet for advice, but don't be too panicked about your dog being in pain as there's a good chance she may not be.

My girl also had an injection and she was completely fine, the only issue we had was her chewing at her skin (Not the stitches) where she had been shaved so we just used neocort cream on the area as it was a bit itchy. No pain or anything with the desexing though

Thanks everyone. We had a bit of a sleepless night - she whined a bit and then finally settled at about midnight, until she decided that she had to be on the bed at 2am, and then decided she had to be off the bed at 5am. She got on okay, though I almost freaked out when I realised she'd jumped up there, but when she decided that she didn't want OH to lift her off the bed and scrambled away to jump off herself, she squealed in pain and we had to make sure she hadn't busted any stitches. However, she's back to her normal self today and has spent the day making OH watch her like a hawk because she keeps trying to run around and play. I think you were right and it was just her reaction to coming out of the anaesthetic, but it was hard watching her so distressed.
