Dory the Doted One
Hey Guys.... So at 12.30am lastnight, Dory starts coughing and retching. At first I thought it was the Pate the BF gave her....or maybe the Cheese. He loves to spoil her. And that she was trying to chuck. But...it would seem she has KC, at this stage. Boss gave her a prelim check and none of her glands are up, she hasn't had any bones. But she has been getting progressivley worse as the day unfolds. Would you tell others that your dog has socialised with that yours have KC? It surprised the heck out of me...in all my years...this is only the second time I've had to deal with KC, and that involves lots of shows and trials not to mention dog training. She has only been exposed to other dogs at PPS and at a DOL meet. I'm not blaming anyone...who can know? The damn thing is infective when they aren't even showing signs they are sick. Fortunately she hasn't been around other dogs since PPS, so hopefully she hasn't spread it around. Meanwhile...I'm worried for her. It's horrible hearing her coughing and retching. Absolutely, I tell anyone the dogs are in contact with (or at least did the one time they got it.) I also tell ADAA straight away so that they can advise their members that there were dogs at such and such a trial or at such and such training. Names are not mentioned. At the end of the day it is just like a cold so no one is really to blame unless they carelessly trek their dogs outside of the home when they know they are sick. WreckitWhippet
Yep. Two of my dogs contracted KC earlier this year. The first thing I did was quarantine every dog in the kennel and then let friends and fellow breeders know about it. We were fortunate that it was a localised outbreak and we'd contracted it shortly after a triple show and not before. None of my friends dogs were infected. KC is not usually cause for major concern, but it's something that I take seriously as it can be very nasty for older dogs and especially young babies. swain
Would a kennel take a dog that has kennel cough? We are going away on Saturday and the dogs need to go into the kennel but the little fella has come down with KC. How long are they contagious for? Looks like you may need to have them looked after at home.
Adza
My pup just got over KC. She seems fine now, no coughing or anything and antibiotics finished but unsure how long to wait till she can socialise again, really don't want to spread it. Greytmate
You should tell them. But be prepared for a range of reactions. Not everyone will care, some may blame you for putting their dog at risk, and some might even accuse you of blaming their dog for your dog's illness. Just be careful how you say it. OSoSwift
The one time my dogs got it I know exactly where they got it from, but it is just one of those things. We get colds that we can't avoid as well. The only concerning thing was a friend had her dog at the same gathering and had 2 10 day old hand reared rescue babies (still had placentas attached and found in a plastic bag) who came down with it. Because of the fact they would have had little to no immunity to anything they got really really sick and nearly died. The person who's dog brought it knew the dog had started coughing that day but brought it anyway. I would definately let anyone know who I though I had been exposed to my dog.
