PepitoVFR
Quick question For some years now we have been making a chicken/rice meal which our Maltese X really loves. (Basically by boiling a pot of raw chicken drumsticks with a handful of rice until the water evaporates and then remove the bones leaving the chicken meat with the rice) Have been using white rice but wondering if brown rice would be better for her? felix
As far as I know, dogs don't need cereals in their diet. So I would vote for no rice at all. Also, I feed my dog raw meat with bones. I believe it is better for them. Sorry, I just realise I didn't help you much (or at all). Maybe somebody else will give you better advice. Tilly
I think brown is better then white ... my boys also love their rice from time to time (mainly leftovers) but I don't think it is necessary in their diet - just a bit of variety
shmoo
Rice is just a cheap filler. Use something else like cooked then mashed pumpkin Fantastic for dogs.

ellz
What would be even better for her is to just give her the raw chicken drumsticks and eat the rice yourself!
shmoo
ok, thanks.Have found this article on feeding rice to our dogs. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/rice-diet-for-dogs.html Is that website for real? That is a lot of grains. I would personally feed more meat and veggies (and only a small amount of broccoli - less than 10% of the diet). The only time I feed a rice based diet is for short term when a dog is ill and it's stomach can't handle anything else OR in a diet for a dog long term that has a sensitive stomach. shmoo
Have a look at Dr Billinghursts BARF diet if you are interested in feeding a 'home made' diet. http://www.drianbillinghurst.com/index.php
