zoiboy
One of my boys is a Maramacdonald lad too - I dont think mine has ever been that clean though he lives with the sheep. You must have been writing this as I was doing the last reply . Trust me Astor is not often as clean as he was at the royal and the camera was VERY kind to him, he lives with cows and chooks!!! LizT
Congratulation on your beautiful babies!! Big breeds large litters...is it so for all large breeds???? CKCS average 4-6, the largest litter I've heard of with them is 9??? I had a German Shepherd boy once who was the runt, the breeder told me he was No. 18 !! Guess he was lucky not to be culled. He lived to 14 years of age.

zoiboy
You win I only got a dozen. Oh I win?? Gee do I get a prize I could do with a prize. Eggs or a milking cow (with a milk maid) would be wonderful. I have a bakers dozen now. The Bat sat on boy number 4 on day 4 and he didn't stand up to well to being sat on by his Mum. CONGRATULATIONS on your litter and I hope they are doing as well as this white wave I have here. The rest of the little dears are now between 1.5 kilos and 2.2 kilo's (at 17 days) so I think it may be fair to say they are doing OK and if my fingers tell the truth the Bat is actually gaining some weight, is well over having her butt washed and has gone back to work part time. LizT, I have no idea if it is *normal* for maremma to have such large litters but I am not fond of the idea of another litter if it is the case

PS. You'd be wanting a "Milking Goat" not cow LOL

Steve
Im curious - how much did you do to help her while she was whelping?
Steve
CheersLinda Mine stay white for a while I don't weigh them or mark them until a bit later. They all just look like peas in a pod. I reckon she can count too by the way she lines em up like sausages. I love Maremma babies.
zoiboy
Im curious - how much did you do to help her while she was whelping? Precious little really. The whole thing went live on ustream (that was not quite intended, but s**t happens) and apparently I should have helped a lot more according to some. I rubbed the odd pup and put them in reach now and then. As the next pup arrived I took the last pup, weighed it and coloured it. Provided milk and or icecream between whelps. Mostly I left it to the bitch as thats what she does. Since whelping I seem to feed her often, wash her bedding and butt. Yesterday I put them out in the yard for a few hours and that will continue now. Cheers Linda
fifi
Congrats on your litter :-) Just a quick question about losing your pup to the dam, In giant breeds, many breeders sleep/eat/live in or next to the whelp box and with a very large litter, often have half in & half in a box with a heat source, rotating. Its three weeks full time and they are never left alone. To do chores we time it with the mum being out for toileting or put a puppy pen around the whelp box with mum on a mattress on the outside of the pen for a little while.. ect. Even then I know of the odd accident that happens with big elbows & bodies. I can't watch the streaming thing as our satelite broadband is pretty crappy, so I'm unsure how you manage such a large litter ? do you have to stay with them ? are Maremmas' careful mums ? fifi Edited August 22, 2010 by fifi
zoiboy
Congrats on your litter :-) Thanks FiFi, we are pretty happy with then so far. Just a quick question about losing your pup to the dam, In giant breeds, many breeders sleep/eat/live in or next to the whelp box and with a very large litter, often have half in & half in a box with a heat source, rotating. Now I am not sure about other breeders, Steve is far more qualified to answer this than I am really. What I am doing is to provide a nice big soft bed and clean sheets. The Bat is a first timer and doing great, she sat on the one yes but I think he was a victim of his own lustyness in a way, as he was racing for the milk bar as she sat in the only vacent space. She has certianly been far more careful since then and has not sat on any more. I have not split the litter or slept with them (i don't share well and there is barely room for them on the double bed). In my VAST EXPERIANCE of excatly 2 litters :D all I do if at all possible is provide food and clean bedding. The bitch is in charge of what does and does not happen with her pups. They are after all just that, her baby's. Its three weeks full time and they are never left alone. To do chores we time it with the mum being out for toileting or put a puppy pen around the whelp box with mum on a mattress on the outside of the pen for a little while.. ect. Wow and I thought I was busy I can't watch the streaming thing as our satelite broadband is pretty crappy, so I'm unsure how you manage such a large litter ? do you have to stay with them ? are Maremmas' careful mums ? I am sorry your connection won't let you watch the streaming, that has been a great deal of fun aside from the odd techinical difficulty yesterday. fifi
Thanks Linda, Wow, she had done so well to only squash one without intervention ! some mums are great being careful and at counting I think :-) Yes, I'd love to watch the streaming vid, but we can barely watch a utube video after it takes half an hour to open ! and oh yeah, there's nothing like the utter exhaustion of living in the whelp box for three weeks !! some wolfhound mums would do just fine without supervision, but I've sat litters where if not for being there, there would have been considerably less pups !! and murphy's law applies....the one you lose would be pick puppy ! more piccies are needed in this thread by the way :-)) fifi
Steve
I do about the same. I provide clean bedding and fresh water and food - and that's pretty much it. I sit back and watch TV while she does her stuff, with one eye on her but expecting she knows better about what she should do than I do. I don't touch them or her while its all happening apart from moving the occasional one a bit closer to her now and then to give her a hand and she slid them out, cleaned em up and did all she needed to. This bitch is a maiden and is doing it all without missing a beat.It was all done and dusted in under 4 hours. Once I see they are all feeding O.K. and she has a handle on it I go to bed. Its text book stuff - easy.
