What a F-wit! A dog fight at a dog park, want to avoid a fight, then dont go to an offleash dog park! You don't shoot someone elses dog! A swift kick up the backside probably would have stopped it if it came to that. Bloody hell!

Not assuming anything but what is to say that his dog was not the aggressor, why would it be kept on a leash at an offleash park if it was perfectly safe with other dogs and well trained? ps Thats a retorical (sp?) question.I know there are alot of possible reasons, Im just thinking out loud.

Pleas excuse my grammer, lost for words.

What was that cop thinking!

IF and only IF there was a hell for leather true blue fight going on and your dog was copping it AND you just so happened to be carrying a gun well then yeah maybe - although I don't like guns much at all.

The report said their dog did not have a mark on it - can't have been much of a "fight"

What kind of idiot carries a gun and then discharges it in a public park for not much of a reason.

I think the cop may well need a Psyc evaluation. I would also imagine the average GSD could defend itself quite convingly when comfronted by a Sibe

Is it normal for off duty police officers in the US to carry their weapons?

I think that depends on the state/municipality, but yes, many off-duty cops carry their weapons with them. Even when off-duty if they come upon a situation that warrants police interference they can/are allowed to "do their duty" as an officer of the law. However to take your loaded, off-duty firearm to a dog park where there are lots of people and probably children running around is just plain stupid. Also, this guy was not a local police officer. He is a federal officer, so think glorified security guard.
