I've noticed that these days they're always a little bit red. I'm taking him to the vet soon for an annual heartworm injection and so will ask about his eyes, but in the interim does anyone know what the problem could be? Picture below: They don't seem to be irritated, we don't have a lot of plants in the yard and while he gets a little bit of discharge in the morning, there isn't very much. Red Fox Posted August 3, 2010 Share Posted August 3, 2010 (edited) My brothers dog sometimes get very red bloodshot eyes. I think they have narrowed it down to dry eyes after being in the car... If it were my dog I'd be checking for things like distichiasis (extra eyelashes inside the rim of the eye), you will need a good vet or eye specialist to check for this in most cases, or allergies (grass perhaps?) to start with. A little OT but have you done much research on the heartworm vacc? I know it's a personal choice and many people do use this, but be aware that there have been some adverse reactions to it and that it was withdrawn from the market in the US. In any case, we're seeing the vet this afternoon so can get his eyes checked out. I've phoned to discuss the heartworm issue with the vet again and mentioned the recall of Prohart in the US, the litigation and the issues re collies. They said they've never heard of a problem as they give the injection to lots of border collies without problems. I've said I'll bring in the print-outs I have made on the issue and that my preference is not to give Elbie the injection. They ordered ivermectin heartworm monthly chewables for me last time and from what I can see, these should be all right for border collies but what I'll ask is that we give Elbie one of the chews while we're at the vet's office just to make sure he doesn't have an adverse reaction. SecretKei: Thanks - we're very happy with Elbie. He's very lovable and clever and despite his hyperactivity tends to elicit a very friendly response from people who meet him. A lot of people have spoken fondly of a kelpie/bc cross they used to own so it sounds like a combo that can work even though the resultant mutt is a whirlwind of energy Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I would not be giving Ivermectin to any dog with collie breeding. A Moxidectin based heartworm preventative like the Proheart monthly tablets would be a much safer bet. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with his eyes and weirdly enough, after I posted they seemed to settle down and aren't red any more. The vet said that because of the almond shape of that eye (looks like your bub too) the end bit sometimes collects dirt or sand or whatever, and to clean it with a little warm water on a cotton ball. Whilst it should be checked out, both ours had red eyes as pups and it was mainly at night cause they were tired! Hope it's just that! ETA: I have an Aussie and they can have the same issues with Ivermectic. Unfortunately I've never met a vet who knows anything about it which is very disappointing.
