Puppy Sleep

I know a lot of people have worse probs than I but...

My puppy sleeps from 10pm until 6.30am

She wakes without fail at 6.30am and HAS to get up then. Once she is awake, she will not settle back down.

this is OK during the week, when i am happy (well, not happy, but accepting) to get up at 6.30, however on the weekend I like to sleep in till 8am at least.

If I put her back in her crate she will bark and carry on for a while which kind of defeats the purpose of sleeping in...

She is fine in her crate at any other time but having spent the last 8 hrs in it, I guess she has just had enough and wants to be up and running around.

She can't be left in the garden unsupervised as she has taken to doing her own style of gardening which is not appreciated.

I know I should probably consider myself lucky that she sleeps through the night just wondering how long it will be until she can sleep for a little longer :D

How long do your puppies sleep for and is around 8 hrs at night typical?

Any tips for settling her back down in the mornings (is that even possible?)?

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you but I do have a similar problem.

My 5 month old pup will happily sleep through the night also (he sleeps on a mat next to my side of the bed) and he usually wakes at about 6.30am too. He gets let outside to go toilet and will happily go back to sleep AS LONG as it's on the bed with me! There is no way he will settle for staying on his mat once he has woken up in the morning. I try and ignore him but he keeps pacing around the bed whining and putting his paws on the mattress. During the week this is not such a problem as hubby is usually up and going to work so I let him up so I can get some more sleep, but on weekends it creates 'issues' because OH says he is too big to be on the bed (he is a Dobermann) and he takes all the blankets!

My other dogs will stay asleep until I make them get up, whatever time that is! I'm hoping that in time he will also be happy sleeping longer and not feel the need to wake so early.

my four month old is the same, she has to get up around 7am but so long as she is able to sleep with me she will go back to bed for a couple of hours - after brekkie of course

Our Lab puppy is 5 months old and can sleep for 10hours, but only if we shut the curtains to create an artifical darkness. If he sees the sunrise, then he cries to be let out of the crate. We are lucky enough to have a puppy/garden proof enclosed area out the back so we can put him straight outside, give him some breakfast, and we go back to bed until a reasonable hour

James has always been a sleepyhead. He normally falls asleep for the night by 7:30-8pm and I don't think he's ever managed to stay awake past 9pm. He used to always be awake by 5:30am at the latest but we've had a bit of respite for the past month or two. He's been waking up at 5:30-6ish and happily entertaining himself until 6-6:30ish. Until the last week, when he's been up and whining at 5-5:30ish every morning and it's driving me insane! I thought we'd made a sleeping breakthrough!

I have no tips for resettling, I'm afraid. Back until last month or so he was a chronic morning barker until you'd get up to him. Quieting down just came with age. Now he makes a high pitch whine at 5am and I turf him outside onto his terrace in case he needs to wee and I'm just lying there ignoring him. But at least the early morning barking is no more.

Forgot to add that puppy falls asleep at around 7-8pm but "offcial" bedtime isn't until 10pm. We tried keeping her awake until 10 but were unsuccessful because we were trying to watch TV or do homework, study etc.

Maybe a late night walk? but i've heard this can make them hyper after. Also I don't particularly wish to be walking at 8-9pm at night when its freezing or wet because i am a big sook

Do you keep her crate covered & dark?

My two fall asleep around 7-8 as well. I swear they are so lazy! I put them to bed at 10-10.30pm. They will happily sleep until at least 8am.

I keep their crates covered. When they were little if they woke up in the morning I'd take them for toilet trips then put them back to bed. You have to ignore any noise at this point otherwise they just learn that making noise=get up and have fun.

Nowadays they just sleep through. Occasionally I hear some scratching around 7.30ish. But they just had to learn that we don't get up until I say so.

Aussie Lover.... I so understand you pain! Except your situation is now my version of a sleep in!

I find if I make her a hot water bottle and put her back to bed, sometimes that works - but only if it is still dark. As others have suggested, once she sees the sun - she is awake! I used to get up and go back to sleep on the couch with her and we could sleep for another three hours easily. But that hasn't been good for me. And I don't want her in our bedroom (I tried it for a few nights and I think I got less sleep!).

I don't feed Genevieve until about 9.30pm due to my work schedule, and I have started giving her evening feeds (kibble) in a drink bottle, it means she wears herself out trying to get it all out of the bottle!! I have found her to sleep a bit more since doing this, as like you, I don want to be walking her in the dark!

I am hoping as she gets older, she wants to sleep more along the same time as I do! Of late I think she has had her days and nights back to front.

Does anyone know how much sleep in a day the average dog needs?

Depends on what we did the day... but normally:

Bedtime is 10.30pm and light out is at 11.30pm. Wake up is at 5am for Emmy and 5.30am for me, and Charlie is.. well, usually about 8am (but that involves a lot of convincing him to get out of bed). Emmy has long naps in the day too.

If we had a big day with dog parks, picnic or friends visiting... she takes herself to bed about 9.30pm and we won't hear a peep from her till we wake up the next morning.

Weekends, she knows to sleep in.

Charlie sleeps 80% of the day.

I'm trying to get him to train Emmy!

He taught her that napping is awesome though...

Sorry, don't have much advice as my kiddies are pretty lazy, Pepper is the one the one that wakes up at 7am on weekends but luckily doesn't make much noise, but if I hear that she's awake I normally get up myself.

Hopefully Mindy will start realising how awesome it is to have sleep ins! ;)

I think we're lucky with Elbie. We used to wake up every 2 hours to toilet him and then he used to wake up every morning at 5.30am, but these days he'll snooze away in his crate as late as we sleep in ... on weekends it can be as late was 10am ;)

:D I am so very jealous. I've not slept past 6:45am in 5 months.

Although I am blessed with an early sleeper - he stuck his head under the coffee table to pull out a stray bone over 45 minutes ago and hasn't moved since - silly sod fell asleep mid-search

Akira sleeps outside, so she doesn't bother us too much when she wakes up. Bedtime is normally around 9:30, but she'll put herself to bed earlier if she's tired. She'll be awake anywhere between 6:00am and 8:00am depending on how tired she is. For example, last night she put herself to bed early, so this morning when I let her in at 6:30 she was already up and playing. However Friday morning, she was still in her kennel asleep at almost 7am and she came inside and slept in her beanbag until 8am.
