Dory the Doted One
1. Flead. Check 2. Wormed. Check 3. Anal Glands emptied. Check 4. Not eating food that makes us itchy. Check So why on EARTH is she still scooting her butt? Does she like it or something? So the question is, has any one got any other ideas of what might be going on? She has been vet checked...regularly, but we can't find a thing wrong with her. When not scooting it, she is licking it. Today she started at one end of the courtyard and scooted to the other. Got up...walked back to where she started and did it again. Rest of the time she is fine. When she is in the house she doesn't do it. When she is with us, she doesn't do it. It's not a constant thing. But it is often enough to be noticeable.
Erny
Could it be that she irritated it by scooting and now it's the irritation that causes it to become a cyclic condition? Perhaps try soothing the skin around and of her anus with some paw paw ointment for a few days or so, and see how she goes? The other thing I'm thinking is a possibility, is maybe she's got a poop to come that's got a bit of bone in it, that might be causing her some discomfort??? Or perhaps something that started, was inadvertently reinforced and now she gets attention from it where she otherwise might not? Just a rough guess at possibilities. Mrs Rusty Bucket
Mine was scooting today. She had a hair sticking out of the centre. Though that happens a fair bit. I don't know how she gets them in there, they look fresh, not like they've been all the way through. And she has a short coat. And then a bit later she had the runs. EEK. Thinking the meet up is off until she does something normal. And that might go for both of us. I think sometimes she scoots cos it feels good and that's how she empties anal glands? Sometimes cos she has something stuck eg piece of grass that she didn't chew into small pieces. So on your check list - where is the checked under tail - all clear check? Dory the Doted One
Oh...we did the check butt check too. Much to her horror. There's no poop. Forgot all about paw paw cream. I think we shall give that a go anyway and see if it helps. It's the only thing I haven't tried. (soothing ointment for an irritated butt that is). I was wondering if she was doing it because it felt good. It's really embarrassing when she drops the butt and does it across the floor in the middle of Puppy PreSchool. Erny
It's really embarrassing when she drops the butt and does it across the floor in the middle of Puppy PreSchool. When I was a young teenager we moved home and with the new home came a dog that the Vendors of the house we bought didn't want to take with them. "Tiger" was his name. I'd say a short haired Border Collie x Blue Heeler. Anyway, he used to butt scoot. We had a fine but gravelly and very very long driveway on our new acreage property. And Tiger used to butt scoot his way up that. Our eyes would water just watching it. He was a bit of a 'smiler' too, so he'd do it with his big teethy grin on his face. Silly bugger. Lordy, he was a great dog. I wish I knew then what I know now. I think I would have appreciated him more. Or perhaps I did, but just miss him a lot. Sigh. We knew nothing of butt scooting possibly being an anal gland problem way back in those days, so poor Tiges just got wormed. But he didn't do it all the time and the mainstay diet was bones, so I suspect that the majority of time the anal glands fixed themselves. ellz
Does she have long hair around her anus? You may need to cut it short so that it doesn't tickle her.
persephone
Couls well be an irritation of the vulva/urethra as well ;) Might be worth checking for inflammation, ingrown hairs, UTI.
~Anne~
Couls well be an irritation of the vulva/urethra as well :D Might be worth checking for inflammation, ingrown hairs, UTI. Exactly what i was going to say. I have a bitch who scoots on and off and if you watch carefully, she is rubbing the vulva and not her anus. She has a deep fold around the vuvla and this area gets irritated. I wash the area a few times in Malaseb and it resolves the problem for a while. I took me some time to work out the problem with the scooting.
aussielover
My puppy has done this once or twice. I freaked out and had her checked for worms and anal glands which were all fine. I noticed that after she did this, as soon as she was allowed outside she would do a poo. Could they do this because they are trying to "hold it in"? She also has a fold around her vulva which I try to clean the area regularly so this could be a cause I suppose.
Genabee
Genevieve has done this since the day I bought her home. I too had a mini freak out. The vet has checked her out for it several times and everything is normal he reckons... Suggested that some dogs just 'do this'. I do notice she is does it no where near as often after I've bathed her - but when she is coming up due for one, it gets worse. So I imagine it could be dirt etc. irritating her (she likes to grovel around in the garden!).
Dory the Doted One
Her Vulva is all good, Boss checks that each time to be sure. She does have fluffy britches, but she has a very natural slip way for any poop. So no hairs tickling her butt. We have just had a new kitten enter our lives, which is Miss 14's responsiblity. Sometimes she is not quick enough to pick up the food and Dory has had a couple of bowlfuls...it would co-incide with that. So I'm leaning towards an allergy flare up. Miss 14 is now aware and is a bit more conscientious now. I am relieved to know that someone else has had the same sort of allergy reaction. I've seen ears, feet, tummy's and all the usual allergy responses....but an itchy ring? Who would have thought it?!

Nekhbet
if theres nothing noticably wrong i would put it down to a dog just wanting a good old butt rub on a satisfying surface. My rottie loves rubbing the base of his tail under the computer desk or against the back of his couch. He's an allergy dog, but there's nothing annoying him at all, he just growls, has a good rub then goes to sleep I think we forget they're dogs sometimes
