For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant

Good to hear there's no recurrence of the health issue :D My boy was done partly due to an enlarged prostate so I'm hoping that doesn't happen again.

Oh and Lewis's testicles were still tiny up until around 3 months ago, the were REALLY tiny then 12 months post implant seemed to get a bit bigger but then stopped again.

Very similar with my boy. At around the 6-7 mark his testicles did increase slightly in size, but they're still only about half normal size. With the warmer weather I'm seeing more dangle but not volume

I doubt I'll get him collected again. He's on ice for future use :)

Well Lewis has been a whinger and totally Rommi fixated. Not too much of an issue nothing very disruptive.

What was slightly more disruptive was the wet dream he just had and the fact he just ejaculated over himself, the beanbag and me...... Sigh , he is lucky I love him!!!! Only another week and a half to go! I think I am going to take her to the kennels so he relaxes at home a bit

ETA - my kennels not someone else's :)

Just thought I would update about chases implant. He had it put in at end of July 2011 at 14 months. I've recently had both of my girls in season. One he was a little bit interested in but not over the top ( bit frisky, sniffing/ licking her and doing the teeth chomping and did try to throw the leg over but she told him off), but that was about it. Was not interested in the other bitch at all. His testes are still small and soft. I went to have him collected today to see if he was producing anything, as I've had a few stud enquiries. I wasn't expecting he would be ready but needed to know for sure. Well the vet couldn't even get a collection. Very disappointing it has lasted longer than 12 months but as stated previously in this thread it was an emergency so had to be done. I'll update again when something changes. This thread is great because I've researched and there isn't alot of info out there, so hopefully it will help others considering the implant.

So he has been 15 months now.

I was told the implant wears off in 12 months and it then takes 60 days to be producing viable sperm- obviously it has in many cases taken longer. Hopefully it won't be too much longer for him.

When Lewis's testicles started getting bigger they did it very quickly

Brookie was implanted last October with a 12 month implant and it is wearing off now.... happy about that! When they say viable sperm after 60 days, is that from when his balls return to full size? Wondering when is the best time to get him tested and where in WA is the best place?

I got told that 60days after the implant has worn off they will produce viable sperm. I guess apart for actually testing testosterone levels the only other indicator would be testicle size as the lack of testosterone shrinks them.

Any vet can get a sample and check out numbers etc etc but I would be thinking going to a repro vet would be the best idea. They quite often also have teaser bitches they can get in so you don't have to find your own.

If his testicles are normal size, I would wait around 60 from when you think they are normal size then get a sample.

Oh well at least the object of his desire isn't a person!! Poor Zac hehehe yep I would get him tested anytime if his testicles are back.

Lewis would mate and tie in March do probably a good 6 months before they were back to normal size, but he was far more whingey and annoying last time :)

Can't answer the first bit but we had semen analysis done at Applecross vet :)

Just another update on my boy chase. It's been 20 months now since implant. I went to try get him collected again last week, we had a teaser bitch he did the right things but nothing eventuated. So we took some bloods so we could check his testosterone levels and the vets rang me the next day to tell me he had less testosterone levels than a desexed male dog. They rang the company that made the implant and they said 70% of dogs that have a 12 month implant are back to normal by 2 years and and 95% are back by 2.5 years and they recommend only using a 6 month implant on breeding animals.

If that's not bad enough the repro specialist who initially saw chase with his penis issue is concerned that his problem will return when the implant wears off given that it took a good 15-20 minutes for him to " go down" after trying to get the collection, given that he supposedly has less testosterone than a desexed dog and he is concerned about having him collected when it wears off :( anyway stay tuned for another update down the track!

Wow sounds like many stories we are starting to hear!!

I would agree, I would never recommend a 12month implant for a stud/show dog.

Not good news on the concerns that his medical condition may return. I didn't get Lewis's testosterone levels checked so not idea what he was at that stage but he suddenly regained his testicle size etc in a matter of weeks, so hopefully Chases does come back to normal soon. Are you planning on collecting him then desexing?? Due to his medical condition?

Thank you for the update, I think we have more case studies in this thread than I managed to find after googling for hours and hours. Hopefully we can help other people if they are faced with wanting or needing to use this implant.

An update on my boy in case it helps with statistics :) 14 months after a 6 month injection my boy finally appeared to return to normal. His testosterone behaviours and testicle size returned, and pretty rapidly. Thankfully this was a month after my girl had her first season, throughout which he was entirely disintersted :D I can't see that happening next time though. :o

14 months for the 6 month implant - goodness!!!

Did you get a semen test done at all??? I got one on Lewis done around 4 to 5 weeks after his testicles rapidly returned to normal etc, and he was at that point classed as having low fertility. I am hoping an extra 7 to 8 months will see that ahs improved!! Time will tell.

Great to see people are stilla dding their experiences, I think we may justa bout have the most comprehensive collection of real life data available!

My boy had a 12 month implant in April 2011 he still hasn't returned to normal. I was hoping to use him this year but it looks like he may never be used again.

Don't get too worried just yet it took Lewis over 2 years for him to start producing sperm, 2 years 3 or 4 months???

Easier to say than do I know. fingers crossed things return to normal soon. Such a worry :(

I want to start showing my boy as a veteran soon.

Does anyone know if it will be ok to do so with his implant ? I've spent the last 18 months growing his coat back (he's a Shih Tzu).

The only positive to the implant is that I've had quite a few bitches in season over the last 2 years and I haven't needed to lock him up I'm only disappointed as I had planned on mating him to a bitch who I've planed on only having one litter from. Guess I'll have to wait til her daughter is ready now.
