bonnie22
Hi there everyone, I have been trying my dog on Royal Canin as reccomended by the shop.I have a Maltese x who was abandoned ,she is aprox 12mths. She is not overly excited with the food but I noticed she does pick at it now and again . Is this normal? and should I just peservere with this food. Not sure what she likes.Maybe she was give can food or something. Also am I best to shop on line for products for her or just shop around and buy from a store? I look forward to all your replies, and thank you all so much for the help I recieved in my previous letters it has been a great help to this first timer(ME) CHEERS Bonnie22
poodlefan
How much are you feeding her? Is this all she gets? How are her teeth?
Nekhbet
I would persevere. From the sounds of it you just leave the bowl down too. Give her the bowl twice a day, leave it for 15 minutes, then come back and take it away. When she's hungry enough she'll eat. DOnt bother with cans they're rubbish at a high price. Royal canin is available from pet stores all over the place. Which one were you recommended? THere is a few different versions for small breeds
bonnie22
Thank you all for your help and advice. Lilly is on Royal Canine Sensible 30 (for small fussy dogs) This was recommended by the guy @ City Farmers.Don't know much about this brand or whether it is any good. I usually put her food down and leave it there until she finishes it. I will try your suggestion and leave it @ 15min intervals. Sounds as though you know what to do better than me. Als at what age do I think about de-sexing? I think she is around 12mths at present. Thank you guys!! Bonnie22
Nekhbet
desex now, unless she is in season. If she's just had a life change then she may still be settling in or has learned to be fussy. She may go without for a few days but trust me unless she is very ill or you notice the food is giving her diahhrea then stick with it. You can also try soaking it in some warm water to help with the smell, dogs not used to dry food can be a little turned off by it as it doesnt have as rich a smell. Also I would be checking her teeth. Just have a good look there isnt any red or inflammed patches, retained baby teeth etc normal teeth this is what it looks like when the puppy teeth dont fall out. Notice the thinner teeth next to the big canines and the two little incisors at the front still there? These can cause infection and pain so if you see something that looks like it take her to the vet
Genabee
She may just be settling in to the new arrangements, so while she is sussing every thing and everyone out, she may be slow to eat. She will get there though. She sounds very lucky to have ended up in your care. For a first time fur parent, you seem to be asking all the right questions and taking good care of her!
