tlc
Just wondering for those of you that use the heated pet beds, do you have a separate mattress on top of the heated one? Cooper would not sleep on his on it's own, but someone suggested another mattress on top as it may have been too hot. It worked well he sleeps in there ( heated bed is in crate) All the time now and seems to love it! Is it safe to have another mattress on top? Also is it safe to leave it turned on all the time? I have a low voltage heated towel rail that is safe to use on all the time so I wondered if the heated pet beds were designed the same? I don't leave my towel rail on all the time and same with pet bed but occasionally I forget to switch it off. I just want to know how safe / reliable they are? Parkeyre
In the breeder's community; in one the litters thread, one of the breeder's heated beds caught fire in the middle of the night. I'm not sure I'd trust a heated bed now. Scary!
tlc
bloody he'll just the reply I was NOT hoping for. I hope no one/dog was hurt. This was my concern with putting extra weight on top. Someone else told me the dog should not sleep directly on top of them. lots of confusing conflicting advice!
OSoSwift
I use mine turned on all the time and there is a blanket on top of the mattress. I though it was a heat pad that caused the problem in the breeders thread. Not the 9 volt mattress - may be wrong though
Rebanne
I've got two and they are on 24/7 in winter. Couple of blankets on top and the dogs and cats fight for the hot spot

oakway
If this is of any help....I would suggest the heated pads that are used to heat water beds. Totally flat and fully heat adjustable. Much safer than a mass produced heated pet beds/pads.
W Sibs
Yeah, i use it. I put a blanket on top. Charlie loves it. Emmy can tolerate it for a few minutes and the it's the cold wooden floors for her.
tlc
Thanks Guys, Cooper feels the cold, he gets on the bed if he gets cold and thats ok but with the girls and Cooper on the bed it doesn't leave much room for the humans We do have our central heating going 24/7 in winter and while it never gets below 20 degrees he still seems to get cold on occasion, especially after he has had a bath in the evening (I do dry him thoroughly with the hair dryer) I think half the trouble is he hasn't got any fat on his bones to keep him warm. I also worry after he has been clipped in winter so he sometimes wears a fleecy top at night too. He is loving sleeping in the crate now with the heated bed and his normal mattress on top. I think I will just be vigilant in making sure it is turned off during the day. Thanks again for the replys!

Good idea, I was actually thinking I might get my OH to make it part of his morning ritual, Coop always gets up with him but the other 3 stay in bed with me. The youngest is in his crate and OH lets him out to get up with me, so at the same time he could switch off the bed then I don't have to remember I've got a memory like sieve! Parkeyre
Sorry, it was a heat pad. I was going off memory. eta: FIRE Came home last night, bought puppies in from outside and everything fine. OH comes home from work at 10 and I went to bed - woke up at 1 and said "what's burning?" After a quick dash around the house our yellow boy was standing at back door panic barking. Opened door adn the dog kennel was on fire No one hurt and dogs and puppies all fine but they will have to live inside today while I am at work. Looks like the heating pad burnt through the vet bed and it has smoldered and caught light. Edited July 28, 2010 by Parkeyre

Im pretty sure they sleep on the bed and Cooper doesn not sleep in the crate during the day. But how aweful it would be for it to catch on fire if I want home and the dogs were inside! My worst nightmare, everyones really I guess. I don't go out and leave the dryer on either. My BIL is an SEC employee and he tells us some horrendous stories of fires in homes and how they are started!
Parkeyre
Our stove caught fire once, the boyfriend put the bin ontop of the stove as he left the dogs inside and went out to training. I came home from work 30mins later and the bin's bottom had melted, and the rubbish had started to catch fire. Talk about lucky
