Kirislin
What a stoic old girl she must be to not really show alot of pain symptoms in the first place. I hope she has an uneventful recovery.

Kelpiegal
Thanks everyone. I popped around & had a quick visit this afternoon & although she is very gingerly moving about she's held up remarkably well for her age. Now I just have nurse gf through the vet bill!! Although in all honesty she would have paid whatever it took but quite a few free meals at my place will be taken up I think.....
Mrs Rusty Bucket
Last I heard, removing a bowel obstruction - eg strapping tape (damn footballers), from a GR, was about $1500. What's the current rate? It was enough back then to make me take out "expensive emergency" dog insurance.
jm266
Last I heard, removing a bowel obstruction - eg strapping tape (damn footballers), from a GR, was about $1500.What's the current rate? It was enough back then to make me take out "expensive emergency" dog insurance. This sounds about right, my BC had a peach stone, of all things, removed about 9 weeks ago. He then developed a abscess between his stomach muscle and skin. The cost was about $1700 which included diagnosis, operation, 2nd anesthetic for abscess treatment with drains, hospitalisation and 3 days boarding, as it happened a week before I had to go interstate for my uni grad and I didn't expect the friend that was animal minding to keep his drains clear. It took him a couple of weeks before he looked like he was back to normal. 9 weeks later you wouldn't know he had been so sick Like the OP's friend's dog he was just off colour and not himself but had vomited which was a giant red flag Glad the dog is feeling better and that treatment was sought promptly Edited July 29, 2010 by jm266
Staff'n'Toller
The cost is very dependent on time taken in surgery, how much (if any) of the bowel is removed and how many days in intensive care. If the dog has a large section of bowel removed and needs a few nights transfer to a 24hr hospital it can be much more than $1000-$2000. Bowel resection takes a bit longer to recover from, particularly in an older dog, there is increased worry about fluid leaks etc.
Mrs Rusty Bucket
Yeah if I see her eat the forbidden thing, we go directly to the vet for a vomit treatment. But if I came home and she was just off, it would be too late for the vomit treatment. We've had so many bad experiences with bones, I don't give them to her anymore. Fortunatley nothing has stayed stuck, but the passing of bone looks really painful.
