Keeping Entire Dogs

Hey SecretKei, are you considering getting your new puppy soon? :) ... and will it be a Mal, as I know you want one :o

Kei would LOVE to have a new puppy play mate

Added to my previous post, I am very lucky in that I work from home, so juggling dogs etc is not too difficult for me.

If my entire male becomes very noisy and ridiculously anxious when puppy grows up and comes into season, he will either be boarded or if we are not showing him at the time we may consider suprelorin.

I don't completely separate my dogs and bitches, I find that males are quieter and less agitated if they can always see the bitch. Of course they still whinge a bit, but barking and howling is kept to a minimum.

I am amazed at how easy people make it sound to have entire boys around (but seperated) from bitches in season! I guess I'm one of those unlucky ones who's dog/s go crazy if there's a bitch in season around. When I had a bitch in season she went back to her co-owner and was kenneled. It was the only way I could get peace when 'the time was right'. Otherwise the incessant whinging and carry on from my Vizslas drove me insane! It didn't matter if they could see the bitch or not. When my 13 year old rescue Whippet surprsingly came in season she was eventually carted off to a friends place (no way would I kennel an elderly dog like that), thanks poodlefan :) As much as I prefer dogs, I am contemplating a bitch again for my next pup, but dealing with the boys when she's in season is really worrying me....

Soon ...ish :) Still a few years off yet, and yep, still considering a Malinois (amoung a couple of other breeds)

I just have way too much work to do with Kei first before I can even consider it :)

And yes Kei would LOVE a puppy! We had a little lost SBT girl here last week and he thought all his Christmas' had come at once!

For the moment I'm just trying to get my head around how people manage. The neighbours bitch has been in season recently and while we've had no whining or anxiety Kei has become a complete airhead of late. Training session have been interesting where even sit command gets a reaction of "Wha.. huh?... say it again?"

I have a designated bitches box. A 3m long by 1.5m wide and 1.8m high run, with a roof, shadecloth on the mesh walls. Bitch spends four weeks in there (apart from supervised runs etc). The dog will be elsewhere. If I let the bitch out, the dog will be crated in the house or something where there can be no accidents while you are juggling.
