shazzcatz
Just wondering how often people feed their dogs eggs, and does it matter whether or not they are raw or cooked? My kelpie loves them cooked and raw, but just not sure whether he should have them daily, or just a couple of times a week. Thanks.
Sandra777
Mine get one twice a week (15kg dogs). Raw, including the shell.

Thanks. I'd like to hear the answer to this too.... mine love raw and cooked eggs... Lately i have been giving them a cold hard boiled egg each morning, they LOVE it, and eat them shell and all! Surely an egg a day can't be bad....
shazzcatz
The shell too? I'm guessing you crumble it up? Or leave it on the egg?

W Sibs
Mine has egg milkshake once a week... we crush the shell and put it in their milkshake.
Sandra777
some will eat the shell, others not, some you have to crush it up, others just give them the whole egg. Trial and error. Whenever I'm using eggs for our own cooking I'm surrounded by the garbage disposal team begging for the shells. Pups learn early here that egg shells are food - but the look on their face's the first time is usually priceless
shazzcatz
Thanks for your responses! I never thought to feed the shells. Might give it a go with his dinner tonight and see what his reaction is!!
Miss Danni
Feeding the egg raw, shell and all, makes it a complete and balanced feed and an excellent protein source. Without the shell, too many eggs can cause problems by blocking the absorption of biotin. I have a bitch feeding pups at present and 4 days a week for the next couple of weeks she will get a Nutripet Egg Flip, after that she'll go back to a raw egg or two a week mixed into her dry food (with shell). Eggs can definitely help with coat, but in moderation!
aussielover
Aren't eggs quite high in calories? I may try feeding one to Mindy. Is it ok for a 4month old lab puppy? Do you find they prefer cooked or raw? What would be better to start off with? How much of the dry food would I have to remove from her daily ration to compensate for the egg? Thanks
Genabee
So I gave Genevieve and egg last night with some kibble. I semi cracked the egg over her kibble. What no one warned me about, was her sudden desire to run around the house with egg shell in her mouth, dripping egg white/yolk everywhere!!!!! Personal note to self, feed her eggs outside!! She did enjoy it though. And it was funny to watch - she ate all the kibble from around it first. Then used her paw to tap the egg... then proceeded to lick it (slowly at first) and then.... picked it up and ran with it! After leaving a mess all over the floor, she went back to her bowl and licked up what was left!
Sandra777
Aren't eggs quite high in calories? According to google, around 90 calories. I guess you could add some more for the shell Is it ok for a 4month old lab puppy? Isn't anything I give them to 6-8 week old pups, I'm sure she'll be fine Do you find they prefer cooked or raw? What would be better to start off with? Either, both, whatever suits you. No point cooking them for a healthy dog though IMO. How much of the dry food would I have to remove from her daily ration to compensate for the egg? err, 90 - 100 calories worth? Should be on the side of the bag. Haha! And i love watching their response when they get offered something new, that they've never had before! the first time i gave them a boiled egg with shell still on it, they carried them off bewilderedly, but then didn't have any idea what to do with them - were they a toy or something to be eaten?? i had to crack open the shell a bit to show them... And the first time i gave them a whole sardine each from the fish shop... they were so scared! i think it was the eyes... looking at them accusingly... sebastion 2
I never give my boys full eggs as I have chooks and I don't want to encourage them to nick the eggs straight from the chook pens. This is a lesson I have learnt from experience they do get egg mixed in with their dinner though, but I have never given them the shell altough after reading this thread I may.
