The assessor said to me they don't expect all dogs to like each other as this is just a false reality. Tully barked a little bit but that was fine, she doesn't bark aggressively just likes to tell every dog not to get to close :D she was a lot more relaxed than I expected her to be. The other little dog that was there barked a lot more tha Tully. Really the reaction to other dogs is just incase you come into contact with another dog on a visit, so it would have to be a severe reaction for them not to pass a dog. The best thing you can do is subject your dog to lots of people in lots of different situations. But if she is well socialized you should be fine. tlc Posted November 7, 2010 Author Share Posted November 7, 2010 Just thought I'd pop this up for a quick update, we are doing our induction at the hospital today, just humans no dogs, it's been a while in the making but we have finally got the ball rolling. We should be doing visits shortly so it is all very exciting. It's nice to be doing a community service and I hope my doggies can bring some sick people a little joy!! From just bringing a smile, to giving them something to be excited about, and providing a destraction from their condition. The benefits of animal therapy are medically proven and that's why hospitals allow the dogs in. Bless you for volunteering your time and congratulations to your dogs. The lady who is coordinating us is organizing the local paper for next week so that will be fun and we will start our visits the week after. I am nervous for my girls now it's up to them, Im sure they will be great and today was the first time I had though :D they will have to get used to the lift, it will be interesting to see how they go in them but there is always the stairs! Lexi cant be assessed until she is 14 months old, so thats in February, but should I submit the paperwork now? We're still following along behind you; Shandy is booked in for her assessment in just under 2 weeks. She had her vet check up with her (newish) vet, who is very taken with her, and says she's one of the best natured dogs she's ever dealt with! I really think she could pass an assessment she has come such a long way in the last few months Because we are a sub branch of Geelong they only do the assessment every 6 months, so I just sent my paperwork in about a month before, I had all the vet work done and got my references organized then just waited for the assessment day. If you submit the paperwork now they may not accept it because Lexi is not the right age yet? Could you perhaps ring the point of contact In your area to see what they think? As for how long we spend on the ward, that is up to us and our own judgment with the patients, and also depends on how many patients are on the ward and who wants a visit. Yay! It's a wonderful job the Delta Dogs do. 3 of my GSDs were Delta Dogs and worked in the Hospitals...one worked in the Rehab with Stroke Victims. He was wonderful with the stroke victims The other 2 loved the Children's Ward. Two of them also worked in the Nursing Homes as well and the Respite Day Care Centre. The daughter of one of them worked in Palliative Care at Calvary Hospital Kogarah NSW. Leada used to be given Stress leave every 3 months because the loss of patients she had bonded to took its toll of her emotionally. Leada was a prolific fund raiser for Delta as well. Randal actually was given an Australia Day Award for the work he did in the local Community as a Delta Dog..... the only dog in Australia so far to be given this honour. tlc Posted November 15, 2010 Author Share Posted November 15, 2010 Just a quick update, we had our first unoffical visit to the hospital today for the purpose of the newspaper to come and take some photos, so hopefully we will see ourselves in the paper later in the week. We also got to visit two little boys, One of the boys was in some of the photos. I was so proud of my girls, they were just awesome, didn't miss a beat, Tully got her ears pulled and she didn't even bat an eye. They both were fantastic in the lift and I think they really enjoyed the whole experience. We start our first offical visit next week so we are really looking forward to it. Cant wait to see the girls in the paper but dreading to see myself, I am usually behind the camera! Cleo have you had Shandis assessed yet? It must be getting close now. A couple of snaps from today.
