Nekhbet
there is only one dog present per person when you visit, I dont think two people with two dogs ever go to a place and dogs are to be under control. They're allowed to be dogs just not have a go or be aggressive and out of control.
spoilt lab lives here
SLLH do you find with Ramses that the people that are severly handicapped are a bit unpredictable with their behaviour around him? There is one man who punches and hits when he gets excited. He has whacked Rams once but Ramses barely noticed and I now keep an eye on any movements which may lead to a whacking when we are with that man. Usually they just go quiet and take him in. Another guy barks like a dog all day every day except for when we are there. He is silent and watches every move Ramses makes.
tlc
Wow barking man, that must drive the other residents insane! My friend has figured out who is the pincher and who is the hitter and steers clear of them if she is able.

The only places there are allowed more than one dog/handler team is at the Children's Hospital and at fundraising days.
tlc
How closely do they test the dog with another dog on assessment day, I will be right with Tully if the other dog is not to big. Maybe I can use her ball to get her focus on me?
spoilt lab lives here
Not too much dog to dog testing at all. There will be plenty of other dogs around on assessment day but they are not tested together because its not about dog to dog interactions its dog to people interactions and thats what they focus on. Scarlet
trust me it's not very hard at all if your dog is socialised and dog friendly. They dont ask for perfect obedience. Two of my dogs used to do it but I dont anymore. I was in a children's hospital in Brisbane and there were visiting dogs - not sure who they were accredited with. They were NOT that obedient - but they were VERY tolerant of the children. The dogs were kept on long leads so the owner/handler could keep a pretty close watch on them anyway. Narcissa
Wow, I've always wanted to do something like this, it's indeed very rewarding, and I'm big into animal volunteer work. I would love to hear of everyone's progress and experiences, challenges you face etc. Off to find a similiar program here in Singapore. Was only going to do Canine Good Citizen with Maxey, but I think I definitely want something a little more. My volunteer work has always centered around the animals' welfare, and I think I'll like to touch some people's lives too.
Gamby
Thanks to all the newbie Delta handlers for offering to give up their time to visit people who for some reason or another cannot keep a dog with them. It is such a rewarding thing to do especially seeing the smile on the faces of the residents when they see a dog enter their room.
