haylz27
I wanted to see if you guys can give me some good recommendations. Books about training; I use positive reinforcement. So books about teaching commands, tricks, ect. Books about dogs in general. Books about Australian Shepherds and/or herding breeds. Or even a book about the different types of breeds. Dog myths. ANYTHING! Btw, I don't mean story books. I mean books with actual information. I want to learn more and I figured I'd buy a few books while I have some spare cash. I've bought a lot through Fish Pond and they are very good. Dogwise is great, but the overseas postage can be a killer
Bully
another book I forgot to mention is ''Scaredy Dog''--by Ali Brown''The Intelligence Of Dogs''--Stanley Coren I've got "The Intelligence of Dogs" and he rates the Bull Terrier as 90/100 for intelligence. Bit of a worry when both Pele and Jessie before her often outsmarted me
dancinbcs
Anything written by John Fisher, especially "Think Dog". I wish I had read this before confusing the hell out of my first obedience dog. It explains life from the dog's point of view and makes you "think dog" before getting your dog to do anything. I have read a lot of training and dog behaviour books but this one is the best I have come across.
Gayle.
The best book about Australian Shepherds is All About Aussies by Jeanne Joy Hartnagle-Taylor. Its the definitive guide to the breed and the author and her family have been involved with Aussies since before they were a recognised AKC breed. In fact, they were instrumental in bringing that about. Almost all pedigree Aussies go back to dogs bred by the Hartnagles and there are pics of some of their original dogs in the book, plus stories about them, so it's interesting to be able to see your own dogs ancestors. Only problem is you're unlikely to find the book in Australia unless you find a second hand copy on eBay. I bought mine from Amazon.com.
Sayly
Beat me to it Gayle. Great book and worth having if you are contemplating getting an Aussie.
dancinbcs
Forgot to mention books about Border Collies. The only ones with any relevance to Australian Border Collies are "Border Colllies" by Joan Bray, a very good guide to what it is like to live with a Border Collie and "The Border Collie in Australasia" by Peidje Vidler, that covers the history of the breed and has advice on keeping a Border. The second book is only available as a limited edition second printing from Ballyann Border Collies at the moment, but you may find it in a library or be able to borrow a copy from someone with Borders, to read. Genabee
I've got the 'Dummies Guide to Puppies', which goes in to lots of details about all sorts of things, tricks, first aid etc. included. I don't think it is just for puppies, its a great guide for anyone training any age dog. I have found it invaluable as it breaks things down and I found it to address issues that I could not find in other books or online. Also another book, 'Good Owners, Great Dogs'. Amazon is great for books! I also have a few books specific to my breed, but I don't think the ones I have will be of that much use to you!
