Dame Aussie
I'm always careful watching my two with bones and thank Dog....Mosley just started pawing at his mouth and getting very distressed, I managed to look in his mouth and a little bit of bones was stuck across the top of his mouth between his teeth! Luckily it was small and I was able to get my hand in and pull it out, but I tell you what, I wasn't sure I'd pull a full hand out again Bloody bones! Shmurps
Scary isn't it..Same thing happened to us the other night. Gave Maggie her usual chicken wing, next thing she is doing weird licking and pawing. Checked her mouth etc couldn't see anything. straight to vet and had x-ray. Next morning still not right, check in her mouth again and there was a tiny little cut, back to vet no bone splinter. All good. Vet said shouldn't give chicken wings said to give greenies, I said no. She has had wings for 5 years never been a prob before now.
Dame Aussie
Very scary! I agree though, I could never stop giving my dogs bones, they LOVE them so much
corvus
It's happened twice to Kivi and once to Erik. One a bit of dried pig trotter, once a bit of kangaroo shank, and once a bit of cow hoof. It seems particularly likely when they are chewing on something that is a little softened. It sure made me appreciate all that work I put in to teach Erik to let people look at his mouth! He went still and didn't fight at all while I pulled it out. With Kivi both times we had to pin him down.

Jacquiboss&scoop
it is scary when it gets caught on the roof of the mouth between the teeth . a trick I came across when it happened with my cat was to take a pencil and flick the bone out with the blunt end , or use a small pair of scissors hook the handle loop around a bottom canine tooth while you flick the bit of bone out with your finger this is a little safer as cats and dogs panic a little when stuff gets stuck and might bite by accident
rubiton
Ive had a finger chewed on and its not recommended (the dog was eating 'something' in the back yard and as she hadnt had bones etc for a while had to take it off her. Anyway she tried to swallow a hugemungous chunk of bone and when I grabbed it she tried to chew it and I got momentarily caught between the molars. I did get the chunk of bone but not the best way to retrieve a chunk of bone.
Mim
One reason why I always supervise my dogs when they are eating. Daina has had a bit of bone stuck across the roof of her mouth twice and once it was stuck vertically between her tongue and roof of her mouth. Elle got a piece of bone stuck on a tooth a few months ago. It was so hard to pull off, really jammed on tight and I was so worried it would pull the tooth out (silly thought, looking back on it). noisymina
In 30 years of dog owning. I think only one bone removal. Not bad. A few macca shells got levered off ...with the first thing I could grab which was, inevitably, a kitchen knife. No worries, the doggies always knew I was helping them and would sit still and let me do it. Certainly helps if the dog trusts you.
kelpiekaye
My mum and dads sheltie had a chop bone stuck across the roof of his mouth once. Dad flicked it out with the handle end of a fork. Worked well. Also my first day working a my friends Boarding Kennels, one of her young Shepherds got a marrow bone stuck right round her bottom jaw behind her main teeth. I had to use a hacksaw blade to cut it off. It is a bit scary.
OSoSwift
I have had it happen with a large piece or trimmed horse hoof. Pliers, a few seconds and out - all good. It is a good idea to have a smallish pair of blunt ended pliers close at hand for things like that, then you are not putting your fingers in the mouth of a potentially very stressed out dog. cointreau
I thought my Dane was going to choke on some bone once so I stuck my hand in her mouth to get it out unfortunately she didn't realise my hand was there and crunched on it, with her back teeth (my stupidity). I knew I needed to go work (I work at the hospital) and get it washed out, so made my way there laughing about the whole thing made it very clear it was an accidental bite and had an x-ray just incase it was broken and yes it was. Long story short I nearly lost the top of my middle finger left hand. Went to theatre now I have a fully functioning finger with some different sensation, Ortho surgeon was surprised I didn't loose the tip because it was only held on by millimetres. Sparkles didn't mean to do it and looked very shocked at the time, still put my hand in her mouth but make sure she knows and have never had another problem. The best thing was I had Christmas and New Year off because I couldn't work.
Dame Aussie
Thanks for the tips He was VERY stressed out and was getting more and more frantic by the second, so I just bit the bullet and ripped it out But yes, a pair of pliers sound good!
