Bad Week For Irressponisble Dog Owners

I saw someone not pick up their dogs faeces and asked them to pick it up, even offered a bag, she said "eww i'm not picking that up, you pick it up if you're so keen, i think it is disgusting" This in a park where kids and dogs sometimes share

Yes you meet psychos in off leash dog park. My dog got jabbed by a man a few weeks ago, why he was playing "chase" with another dog (not his)

Just the other day when we were leaving the vet with Muddy, a family pulled up outside the vet in their car. The vet is on a very busy main road. The parents get out of the front seats and the kids open the side door and out runs an adult poodle X with no lead or collar, the dad is holding a bouncy lab puppy with no lead or collar and one of the kids has a baby rabbit in a slipper?! The poodle X was running around like mad and we held our breath while they tried to catch it. Thank goodness they did, they were lucky. I doubt they will be more responsible next time though.

it looks like it's been a bad week for most responsible dog owners!

my own experience this past weekend was at an off leash park for small dogs wherein a middle aged lady had her 4 1/2 month old malt/shitzue [sp!?] on lead inside the park --- the poor lil fella was busting for a romp with the other little well behaved dogs but she had to keep it on lead cuz, as she put it 'i'd never catch it again'!

we talked briefly and i asked her if she'd puppy schooled her dog and she answered 'oh yeah, i really should consider puppy school' --- i told her one of the things they teach you at puppy school is how to train your pup's recall. i was met with a blank stare!

when i told her that she really should enrol the pup in puppy school and that her pup's vet could provide her with the information, she was unconvincing as to which or where the vet surgery was --- i almost nearly asked her if her pup was utd with its vacs, but i was too afraid to hear her response and by now i was so annoyed by this woman's attitude that i called my two flufflies away and took them for a walk around the park...

I keep my dog onlead because her recall is unreliable. That doesn't make me a bad owner. We have certainly been to puppy school! I'm being responsible, she could cause an accident or frighten someone?

but he said my PUPPY had provoked him and tried to jump on him and he would see me in court if i did anything about it

Mindy actually thought it was a game and did try to jump, after he tried to kick her.

I don't see how keeping a puppy with no recall on leash is irresponsible In fact it would be pretty stupid of her to let if off in that case. Not all non doggie people are aware of what the term "recall" means or know that not all dogs learn to/are inclined to come back on their own. Not all puppy schools teach a reliable recall either - some are just free for alls where the puppies learn nothing but how to value play with other dogs over and above their owners (though yes, there are some good ones out there - usually run by qualified trainers, not vets/vet nurses).

The woman has every right to keep her dog on leash, even in an "off leash" area. Perhaps she was trying to socialise her pup? Or perhaps she just doesn't know any better and presumes the dog park is where you take dogs.

aw geez seems alot of you have had alot of bad experiences lately! The only thing that has happened around me lately has been on facebook where i have a couple of "friends" getting RID of their dogs one guy has recently bought his partner a lab puppy, now he has pics up of his mix bred dog which must be around 2 to 4 yrs old now saying "FREE TO GOOD HOME NEED TO GET RID OF HIM" in the photo's you can see its tied to a kennel on a conrete slab (prob under a car port) just had another look and apparently he jumps the fences and the guy doesnt have time for him.... Another "friend" recently bought a cav puppy from a byb it is not 4 and a half months old and the woman has decided she wants to move and as she is renting it is too hard to get another house with a dog so she is selling it "hopefully i can get back most of my money" obviously alot of thought went into that decision....

lol Me too (with my old boy Toby).... I tried to teach him to come when called.... we just never seemed to get anywhere, and I had no idea what the term recall meant till I joined this forum a week ago!!

lol yes fb oh the joys of fb.

i know a person just got a pup and it sleeps in there bed because he crys all night and day. and i said put him on the floor of your room get him a bed and conforts and let him learn its ok. as you dont want a fully grown boxer on your bed. to teach said pup from day dot what you want from him so you dont have this issue as a fully grown dog. i got all her mates telling me to shove it basicly im like well good luck.

know where this pup will eventually end up (i think he is from a byb) he wont go to training or anything why they got a pup i dont get both work long hours and have a boxer pup at home

I usually dont bother giving ppl advice too much anymore because i just get frustrated at the lil ppl know or understand about their animals dogs esp. Like this comment that i have heard too many times to remember "oh look that dog has a boner (sorry bit rude) he must be excited hahaha oh put it away you dirty dog" ummmmm imo the dog maybe excited but not in that way!!! ppl who dont understand animal behaviour always try to put a human emotion on it.

Its sad about that lil pup (that they dont seem to know much about the breed or dogs in general) my parents jokingly call me a hard a*** cause i crate my toy poodle puppy at night time and dont let him sleep in my bed.... my bed is my space and if i can help it at all i dont let my children sneak in there in the middle of the night so why would i let my dog? (thats just my opinion ;) ) my parents whippet puppy sleeps in my lil sisters bed at night.... it slaps her in the face to go to the toilet in the morning i have kids to do that :D ;)

it was more her flippant responses and attitude that annoyed me, not so much that she held that tiny lil pup at the end of a lead while it bounced around and around and around...

No, it was on the north shore. After speaking with some other dog owners, apparently it occurs frequently. Will not be taking my pup there for a while now which is a shame as it is a nice park with usually only a few dogs at a time and only 5 mins from my place.

Mindy was playing with a whippet puppy the other day (at the same dog-kicking park ) and all of a sudden the whippy took off, ran up the pathway that exits the park and over the bridge above the park It really scared me and it wasn't even my dog.

Mindy thought about following but I called her back :D Luckily she has good recall and is not really one to run off anyway as she likes being close to people (and she is too lazy!).

The scariest part was that the bridge leads onto quite a busy road on a blind corner

The owner didn't even try to call the dog back as "she wouldn't come back anyway" and "she always comes back eventually"

I always recall my puppy and put her back on leash when I see a new dog enter the park, in case it is aggressive, or old, too big for her, or just doesn't want to play.

She is quite rude with her friends that she already knows and will fly into them excitedly, so i'd hate for her to do this to a strange dog.

We have a lovely little park on the opposite corner from our house. It's pretty well-used by people and dogs alike, most of whom are nice and responsible. But there have been more tools than usual around lately.

Two weeks ago I found an entire beer bottle smashed up in the grass! They couldn't even do it on the paving where it would have been easy to clean up. I could easily see a kid or a dog not seeing it and running over it.

The other day we headed down there to have a run around. There were a couple of toddlers and their mums on the playground, along with a lovely amstaff-type. She was nice but had non-existent recall and bad manners, continuing to follow me and Gary around the park. She was jumping all over him which he doesn't like. The owners came and got her back, and she sprinted back across the oval to us. It seems so stupid to bring a dog like that to an unfenced park, when she has no recall and doesn't respect other dogs' space. My dog could have been a grumpy so-and-so or dog aggressive... Fortunately he's not, but she could have easily got much more than his warning snap.

If you can't control both dog and children at the same time, you shouldn't bring them both to the park.

Can you tell me which park it is? I live in the upper north shore and would want to avoid such places.
