aussielover
after a few weeks of no accidents after a few months of no accidents When they ask to go outside (some dogs never do this?) When they can hold on for a few hours etc... when do you consider your dog to be toilet trained? We have not had an accident for weeks, but I still don't feel my puppy actually fully understands the concept. I am super viligilant and will still take her out after waking up and every hr-2hrs when she is awake. The other day she did go to the back door and then went out and did a poo when let out, but that may have been a fluke. If she even goes near the back door I take her out and toilet her. She also toilets on command, so it is hard to know if she actually needed to go or is just responding to the command So I am not really letting her show me that she knows. At what age did you think your dog was toilet trained and how did you know? Thanks!
W Sibs
I was told it doesn't take them till 6 months and older to fully control their bladder... but every pup is different. Some pups gets toilet training quicker than others :p
Michelleva
I've been wondering the same thing about Georgia. She's 6 1/2 months old and hasn't had an accident for weeks too. Now she will bark at the back door when she wants to go out. I go and ask her what she wants and she looks me in the eye, then looks at the door, and repeats till I understand. I'm still vigilent too and take her out fairly regularly, but I think she's pretty much trained.
koalathebear
At five months Elbie seems to be fuly toilet trained: - asks to be let out - no accidents for ages - goes in the same spot in the garden BUT that being said, I have read so many things about dogs (out of the blue) having a setback and forgetting their toilet training when they hit adolescence so we're trying not to be complacent ... whiskedaway
Akira hasn't had an accident since she was 14 weeks old (she was really sick and threw up, and then later that day after going to the vet she "marked" in that same spot) and she's now 20 weeks. We keep our sliding door slightly open and she pushes it open whenever she wants to go outside. Hopefully she is truly toilet trained and there won't be any more accidents. While it wasn't a good thing that Akira wasn't well socialised with being inside as a pup, it's helped us in toilet training because she has always preferred being outside. hachna
hello, my two dogs (mini schnauzer 2.5 year old and s/tzu 3 year old) are toilet trained fully: Mini sch-no accidents since 3month as puppy s/tzu-more than a year They hold more than 14 hours They urinate on command (funny but late night only....) They make noise when they need to go out (mini sch-he cries lol). They always prefer inside with people. To answer to your post: It is when you are totally confident about it. PuggaWuggles
Wugs was done at about 6 months,he will run outside by himself,he could hold for 12 hours at a very early age,and will most of the time pee on command, but we do sometimes have those annoying nights, when we are really tired, take him out for a wee before bed,and he just wont do it,but a few hours later he will let us know its time to pee. He has had 1 accident on my OH while sitting on the couch,i think it was out of excitement and laziness.

I think I jinxed myself, Georgia was outside for ages last night, obviously chewing a bone and having fun. Then she came back inside and peed on my sons bean bag... oops maybe not quite there yet. Magstar
Oscar hadn't had an accident in the house for weeks, so I was thinking that he was toilet trained. But.... he did a big wee on the carpet last night . Oh well we will get there.
Genabee
What was that comment about out of now where they have a mini relapse....? Yes, we did this morning too! I suppose an accident every few weeks is pretty good for a puppy.

Red Fox
IMO I don't think you really know your dog is toilet trained until well after the time that he/she is. My dog hasn't had an accident in the house since around 4 months and asks to go out when we are home/holds on when we are not. But the big test was taking him away with us for a weekend to a holiday house that allows dogs inside (entire male at 20 months old). Turned out his toilet training was perhaps too good. With only a tiny little patch of grass in the yard he flat out refused to go (even with his command he looked at me as if to say "are you sure?"). The when he was finally ready he scratched at the FRONT door, waited for his leash to be put on and to be walked down to a big patch of grass at the end of the street and then went. This was the way for the entire 3 days we were there
